In 2010/2011 I was in a state of huge denial, being gay was just seen as this thing that people shouldn't turn out to be, and that people who were gay probably had a terrible upbringing involving abuse etc.My mindset was that I've never been abused or had a bad upbringing thus I can't be gay. Then the song came along and became mainstream, and to see people actively believing in its message was a wake-up call to me. That definitely deserves some kinda Brintey weird icon. The fact you believe being gay is still a choice is weird. I get that you want people to love each other no matter the choice, but it's not a choice. Taking the word choice out of the equation makes it hard to argue that it's an invalid or immoral lifestyle. You should make a thread about it. It's definitely worth asking more opinions about it. Also you're right, I was being facetious, My apologies I actually didn't say I believe being gay is a choice though, I don't think it is a choice, but I still think the argument that "I was born this way--> ergo, I deserve rights" isn't the ultimate question we should be asking, just the most easily digestible one... It still frames things in a way as if we are helpless victims to our "immoral perversions" and breeds tolerance, not acceptance. Acceptance would be accepting us whether or not it is a choice Like, from some angles we are essentially saying "Don't hate me, because I was born this way". It works well with sayings like "Love the sinner, Hate the Sin" and other rhetoric like that which is moderately problematic At the end of the day, it is just a catchy song/slogan, but I'm slightly worried if thats really how we want things to be seen. They are cute. I see your point on the sinner thing. Religion separates more than it unites. 90% of all the wars fought are religious ones. I think it's silly to be quoting a book thousands of years old. They are great stories, but they are just stories meant to scare a barbaric society into morality, thats why that book is so extreme with its punishment. Unfortunately the authors of the morality were extremely homophobic and the message of love thy neighbor like your brother is lost. I get that you want the love thy neighbor part. I do too. You are right on Born This Way is not the question we should be asking, and it is the most digestible one, but sometime's answering smaller questions will lead us to the path of the answering the bigger questions. Hopefully it's a step in the direction of just general acceptance. I personally do not like the word tolerance it leads to separation of people just through condescending attitudes.
