Hundreds of homes damaged

Small towns north-west of Munich have been conducting large-scale clean-up operations after a tornado swept through causing widespread damage. Shattered tiles, bent balconies and smashed greenhouses were all in evidence with regional fire departments reporting that over 150 houses faced various levels of damage.

A local fire commissioner described the extent of the damage and said that ensuring residents were not hurt was the priority.

Ben Bockemuehl, county fire commissioner: "So the storm struck a dramatic swathe. We have 178 affected buildings, 33 of which are in danger of collapsing, unfortunately 11 are uninhabitable and of course 145 other buildings affected. We ensured in initial measures, of course, that the residents and people there are doing well. We took urgent measures, which was very difficult, because we also have a regional power outage in the area were due to storm damage."

Local officials said seven people were slightly injured during the storm, as well as two more afterwards during the clean-up. Earlier this month the German town of Buetzow was left extensively damaged by what residents described as a tornado that tore off roofs, overturned cars and ripped up trees, with more destruction reported in other parts of Germany.

According to what I heard on the news damages are estimated to be higher than €40,000,000. :ohno:

That is so scary, especially if they are not used to them / never been through one before and didn't know how to prepare.

The US has been dealing with tornado outbreaks for the past 5 days or so. I think we Americans are so use to tornadoes. It is quote uncommon to hear about European tornadoes though.

Tornadoes are just more common in the Midwest because the conditions are right. The Gulf of Mexico is to the south, which sends a lot of warm, unstable air northward. To the west are the Rocky Mountains which create a low-pressure system traveling east and drawing the air from the Gulf to the north.

There are other places in the world that have similar geography like southern Europe and China but it is nowhere as ideal as the Midwest.

I think Germany and other countries should enact tornado prevention and awareness programs like they do in the US. I knew they hit Southern Europe, but temperatures must be really fluctuating in Europe because that's usually what causes tornados, especially in the late spring and summer months

What's going on in Venezuela?  Are they experiencing record-breaking heat or something?

I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

only thing i hear about venezuela is they're o the verge of civil war or revolution or something. didnt hear anything about heat and i just googled the weather and its 85 degrees F rn with rain on the way.

i've been to guatemala before and the humidity is insane so maybe its worse heat than it looks.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

Oh, okay.  When Pierre mentioned Venezuela I thought he meant something weather related was going on down there.  It's pretty sad that they're having so much violence and instability down there.  Venezuela is such a beautiful country with beautiful people, literally.  Hope they solve their problems soon.
