You are all so quick to jump the gun and say "about time" but its a hard thing to do for anyone. Telling family and friends is hard but imagine having to tell an audience of about 1 million people

How the hell is it hard?? jesus, honestly Americans and Europeans have it SO easy. I am an Arab, in Syria, born in an islamic environment and religious parents (in Islam, homos-xuality is a crime punishable by death) and I came out THREE years ago to my parents and all my friends.

:awkney: at the people saying it's a stunt and attention whoring

It's a auto-biography.. I admire him for being totally honest and finally gaining the courage to admit his true self :whitney:

Good on him, I'm glad he's comfortable enough to be open about it, although he had no obligation to tell anyone in the first place  Although overall it is better for more people that he's being open because it lets any young gay girls and boys in his fan base know that it's okay to be gay and helps a lot!

Yeah but you aren't in their shoes, you don't know what pressures they have on them or what's going on in their lives or how unaccepting/accepting their friends or family are  It's easy to say who has it easier when it comes to geographical location and society, but that's not an accurate depiction of how the situation actually is for that person :noparty:

I didn't know either, when I told my dad beat me and  I got kicked out of the house, I slept in a freaking park that night. and I still had courage to tell everyone else that was important in my life and just owned it. I helped change their point of view and their perspective on homos-xuality, in a closed environment such as mine, whenever the word 'gay' is mentioned, the first thing that comes to people's minds is the flamboyant feminine boy that takes it up the a**  and asks people to refer to him in female pronouns. because that's what they were subjected to via the media, whenever there were parodies or gags involving homos-xuals, that's what they showed them, and that was the only way people around me saw homos-xuals as. but now my friends have a completely different point of view, they've met my gay friends, they believe in gay marriage and everything. and my step mom even met my -now- ex boyfriend.. that's why I said they have it easy, because growing up in a society with such a liberal movement and strong awareness of homos-xuals helps. I know it's not a general case, but it is a majority. I for one am the only out person in my entire social circle.

the funny part is that i went from Syria, to live in United Arab Emirates for a year, and then I found out that gays get stoned there. literally :lmao: and I completely shut down and went back in the closet, but now I'm back in Syria and I'm as vibrant and comfortable as ever.. I have a really strong support system of friends that help me. but I am applying for colleges in Europe so wish me luck!

I applaud your bravery and guts and the way you got through your struggles :applause:

I agree that it helps, but there are unfortunately gonna be horrible homophobic people anywhere  Some people are simply too afraid to push through their fear like you did, it can take more time for them to prepare and give themselves the push. When they do it's great because the rewards can be huge (like opening the eyes of those around them, which is invaluable :flutter: ), but it's also a risk some aren't willing to take because they can lose a lot. Some get kicked out permanently and would rather not endure all of that and so wait it out until they're in a safer situation to do so instead. I just don't think it's fair to belittle other people's struggles because you've (general you, not you specifically) come out of difficult situations on top
