Luiz 4,253
The Harper government is signalling its intention to use hate crime laws against Canadian advocacy groups that encourage boycotts of Israel. Such a move could target a range of civil society organizations, from the United Church of Canada and the Canadian Quakers to campus protest groups and labour unions. If carried out, it would be a remarkably aggressive tactic, and another measure of the Conservative government's lockstep support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While the federal government certainly has the authority to assign priorities, such as pursuing certain types of hate speech, to the RCMP, any resulting prosecution would require an assent from a provincial attorney general. And it would almost certainly be challenged under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, civil liberties groups say.The government's intention was made clear in a response to inquiries from CBC News about statements by federal ministers of a "zero tolerance" approach to groups participating in a loose coalition called Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS), which was begun in 2006 at the request of Palestinian non-governmental organizations.Asked to explain what zero tolerance means, and what is being done to enforce it, a spokesperson for Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney replied, four days later, with a detailed list of Canada's updated hate laws, noting that Canada has one of the most comprehensive sets of such laws "anywhere in the world."http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ottawa-threatening-hate-charges-against-those-who-boycott-israel-1.3067497 full story I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it. hmm 979
A lot use Israel criticism to be anti-Semite. And a lot don't, it's obvious when it crosses into the territory of anti-semitism - OT: Unsurprising really Separately; whilst I don't think a boycott is collective punishment, I don't really see the purpose of it at such a grass-root level. hmm 979
that's what anti-Semitsts also say If you're insinuating that all people who criticise Israel's actions are being anti-Semitic then that's completely flawed logic. No country's government is excusable from criticism when they do wrong. Not Saudi Arabia, not Indonesia, not Russia and by extension obviously, not Israel. The use of metonyms may arguably be problematic in certain situations and people's expressions but that's not the same thing.
lego 44,165
A lot use Israel criticism to be anti-Semite. What happened to Freedom of Speech and Freedom of expression in this case? You are so vocal about it in other threads. Double standards?BDS is a non-violent movement with thousands of Jewish members as well. There is nothing antisemitic about it. Freedom of Speech is good as long as it is not hatred. I support criticism of religions, but I don't support racism.

Islamophobia is hatred too, but you are so vocal about freedom of speech when it comes to hatred towards Muslims. But criticism of a goverment is suddenly racism and you support the law which goes against your freedom of speech mantra. FreePalestine

Not an individual folk or humans. I only said that a lot anti-semtists hide behind israel criticism. I never said that a government shouldn't be criticized.
