People being surprised by Gaga's artistry/intellect?

Hey.
So I go to a theatre class every Friday, and for today we had to prepare monologues. I chose the interlude of the Marry The Night video.
Everyone was surprised by the fact that such a text comes from someone like Gaga. Sadly, people where I live still believe Gaga is a stupid, attention-seeking media puppet.. I ended up talking a lot about her, how intelligent she is, and how much she means to me. I'm glad I could "educate" them about her, they seem to have a whole new view on her now.
Has something like this ever happened to you? When you told or presented something Gaga has done, and people were surprised that it was something she said/created etc.?

We don’t care what people say we know the truth. :rockstar:

What you said though it's true. Many people are stuck to meat dress and the media's lies. They don't even know the existance of Cheek to cheek and even ARTPOP.It's not our fault they're ignorant.

When I said I was doing a monologue by Lady Gaga and someone asked me from when that monologue is, I said "from 2011" and that person was like "was that when she wore the meat dress???"
So yah, totally proving your point here :spin:

Honey, it used to be me on the other side. But eventually I let her work speak for itself (because it does with each album).

I honestly think a lot of it might have to do with her just being a pop star. People usually don't associate pop music as being very deep. They see a lot of cheese, s-x, and songs about dancing and getting wasted or liking a boy (or girl). And here she is starting her career out in "silly" or attention grabbing outfits, "clown hair" and using lyrics like "Roma-roma-mamaa!" and "muh muh mah po pokerface," and talking about her "disco stick." None of these things are necessarily bad and are just part of a larger picture/concept but they are the things that get stuck in people's mind. Add to the fact that so many other pop stars were dying their hair and wearing "strange" clothes around the same time, it all comes off kind of trendy-ish; really shallow and gimmicky. Then Born This Way (and really The Fame and Fame Monster were trying to do the same too) came out a little more in people's faces trying to show that she wanted to connect on a deeper level but people just saw more gimmicks and more hype, only this time she is called a copy cat and through all the BS her talents as a singer/performance artist/songwriter are hidden. And of course ARTPOP wasn't really given a chance.

Truth is if you check out her lyrics online, a lot of them are really good. But people usually aren't going to take the time to do that. Most people just want their pop music really catchy with lyrics easy to remember. And when you are a bright and colorful artist that mostly makes pop dance music I think a lot of people just expect party/club lyrics. And they expect her to be silly and incapable of deep thought. So many people I know think that if a person is smart and a talented singer and musician, they wouldn't make pop music. To them, pop music only appeals to teens and superficial party girls. When she had that special on PBS and at the Oscars i heard so many people saying that very thing afterward.

Of course I like pop and know it can be quite diverse, but that's the perception I get among the people I know. Same with Gaga.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
