yeah FFS isn't touching that. I hate to admit it but this era is so messy :( I hope it can get turned around

Actually after some research I think that I was a bit too harsh, the songs are similar in performance to some extend. 45S has more higher peaks while Applause more longevity but the songs are close. Sadly 45S won't maintain the sales Applause did in the end but it is benefited from the fact that it's a Rihanna somg following a very successful Era and its a collab with two very big names so there is hope for it (I think that it already has a special place in Rihanna's discography). The rest of the album is what I'm afraid. The Era is a huge mess.

Well that all makes sense. Gaga and Rihanna are my favorites, but it's clear that Applause is the more memorable song of the two. I love every song she released this era, but it doesn't have the explosive, memorable feeling that her past singles have had entering an album's era. I agree it has a special place in her discography, but it's not that memorable. It really is a huge mess and it's me to say it, but so far ARTPOP seems well organized compared to this :hehe: The more I think about it... ARTPOP wasn't that bad of an era, three singles... world tour... promotion... great visually and creatively. I really hope she can turn this era around. Maybe she's saving the big banger for right before the album release, I guess we can just be hopeful :(

I agree with everything you're saying completely. Very accurate :)

Only thing... I don't think the intention was for BBHMM to be a #1 hit... I think they just wanted to release something for the urban crowd too.

Yup. With the current music direction and the imagery for R8 she's taking, I think if there's a clear intention from Rihanna and her team more than maintaining her commercial success is to change any notion that she's only here to maintain that commercial success by simply resorting to the expected sound from her.

I mean, none of the R8 songs I've heard so far from first listen were screaming mainstream top 40 hits like her previous pre-album singles. They could've played it 'safer' and just collaborate with the usual songwriters and producers who've given her over a dozen of #1 hits. But they didn't. And even if there was a push for 45S to climb the charts as high as it possibly could through the Grammy performance, its sound is still very minimalistic to compete with the 'big', 'loud' singles dominating radio at that time. So from there, it's safe to assume that the priority for this album was to present her as someone more than just a pop hit-maker, i.e. as someone who could collaborate with a legend like Paul McCartney without the need of following what's 'hot' at the moment.

Swan Heart

45S = Applause

BBHMM = Judas

American Oxygen = TEOG or GUY? :gum:

:what:

Please, tell me it's a joke.

They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be.

Honestly I don't see it being successful. I like this song but she has wasted it with the Tidal launch... There's no more anticipation about the song or the video...

Its production sucks, and she repeats ''breathe out, breathe in, american oxygen'' like 1000 times, it won't work as it did for ''we found love in a hopeless place''.

It's better than her Tidal Anthem (BBHMM), but Rihanna may have gone to the minimal lyrics well once too often. Did it with WFL and Diamonds.

Eventhough I don't like all the songs Rihanna released for this album and I am not a fan of trap music I do like the overall sound and cohesiveness this album is shaping to have and I like that Rihanna took some risks and made an album with personality and not another "3 great singles and the rest fillers" concept. I respect that. Sadly the era is becoming a mess though. She can still turn things around but she needs a plan and promo, which I doubt her label will give her for much more this era if she completely flops with AO like Gaga did with GUY.

This era seems to be a mess, I hope i'll feel like coming back for the next album

Idk why everyone just has to make that one 'experimental' album to kind of prove themselves or whatever. Talk that talk was amazing.

I think Team Rihanna think re-invention is the road to commercial success. They know several pop girls have struggled in 2013-14 with dance-pop, and that Rihanna got lucky with both odd sounding Diamond and boring ballad Stay. So they figure 45S and AO is logical next step (with Tidal Anthem for urban market).
