The State of California and the Province of Quebec both are 2 of sub-federal Levels of the Government who already had a cartbon tax trade system ("Cap And Trade")

This system is actually quite sophisticated. Its not just taxing gas and pollution but also goes by credits and has a market. Companies are allowed to produce a certain amount of CO2 Emmissions for every certain amount of economic output which uses up credits. Companies who pollute MORE than their fair share must buy credits from companies that polluted LESS than their fair share and have left over credits.

Canadas Province of Ontario decided to implement this system as well and the plan among California, Quebec and Ontario is to link the 3 Governments in this regard to form 1 carbon tax/credit market in which companies can buy and sell credits from any company from any of these 3 entities!

This system is believed to work better at giving companies an incentive to cut emmissions than standard flat carbon taxes

well that sounds like a really good idea. Climate change is so much more important than some U.S. republicans like to admit.. I hope more states follow california's path.

thing is the Federal Government doesnt have to do everything

If the Countries Government doesnt do soemthing, theres no reason lower levels of Government cant step in and set up their own innitiatives

well that's true! But state level republican's don't seem to be in favor of prevantive measures like this even on a smaller level. When I've told you before that I do feel republican in some senses besides socially it's for reasons like this. Because of states rights, California was able to make this innovative, cooperative effort with foreign governments. And also because of states rights recreational marijuana is available in four states as well as D.C... I sure do think the federal government is in the right at times to make executive actions for all 50 states (like gay marriage) but examples like these show how beneficial state by state agency can be.

I feel like I've heard of this plan before a few years back. Have they been working on this a while?

California definitely has areas that can benefit greatly from green initiatives. Anything that brings down pollution should be looked into, not just for the planet, but for our own health and well being too.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

well thats true. For gay marriage here in Canada at first only some Provinces allowed it too but then in 2005 the Federal Government made it National

But yeah its beneficial. In Portugal where i used to live they only have Districts (probably because its a small Country) and they decide very few things. so basically the Federal Governemnt decided everything which was bad because if they failed to do something nobody else could take innitiative

Here in Canada Provinces are responsible for almost 40% of Government tax and spending (even mroe than US States) so theres a loot of flexibility to take innitiative for things when the Government doesnt

Although sometimes it can also be bad. My Province (Ontario) doesnt think standard CPP has enough deductions and pay so starting next year we are gonna loose an extra 2% of our pay for a Provincial Retirement fund  . So now we will have to deduct for the Federal AND Provincial retirement fund :manicure:

California and Quebec already had this (im not sure if any other Government besides those two did or not as well)

But Ontario was considering doing the same and so they did talks to link the 3 Governments together if Ontario decided to join

So before California and Quebec were doing it alone. Now Ontario is gonna start and they decided to just link the system together so that companies could carbon trade freely among California, Quebec and Ontario

Easier for companies and at the same time more effective cause with a bigger cap and trade market, you stand to gain more if your more effective at cutting emmissions than your competitiors giving companies more incentive to work hard and reducing pollution

I dont know how well its been working there. But it definitely should be more effective than just a flat tax on carbon

When Ontario was in talks to expand its green innitiatives they talked about how in the Province of British Columbia they add a flat tax per ton. For gasoline for example the amount per tone devides up to about 7 cents per litre of gas (20 something cents per US Gallon)

But in British Columbia all its done is drive up gas costs and business costs a little with little effect.

This system on the other hand actually rewards you if you cut your emissions because if you pollute less than your "fair share" per economic output, you get to sell your extra credits to companies that went over the limit and must buy it from you

So in this system it should work better than a simple carbon tax because it punishes those who fail to cut emmissions more heavily while those who do cut emmissions can actually make money off the system!

Why not subsidize non fossil fuel energy production ...  End tax breaks for oil and coal ...

Inherently companies will weigh profitability higher than carbon signature ...  Meaning that if it makes enough money , its worth it to pollute....

the over all impact will give incentive to green centered companies, sure  but it doesn't really need to be that complex.  The pr oblem is passing green legislation thru a corrupt system where votes are capped and traded ....

Theres only so much subsities can do tho. Many jurisdictions already have most of their electricity from non poluting sources. And at the end of the day i think they blow the importance of energy production way out of proportion...

industries themselves pollute way more than a few plants so if u really wanna make a difference, encouraging companies to reduce their footprint can go a long way

wkth this system rather than simply taxing carbon, u make it a competition to who can cut their emmissions the most so that that most auccessful at it can make money by selling credits to the ones that fail

i think its a brilliant idea actually

i usually dont support many green initiatives cause they harm the economy so much. But this is a way to reduce the over-all impact to the economy while introducing a system that really works. And u dont need to waste tax payer money on subsities for this!!!

and if like u said its profitable to pollute, at least the government collects penalties as revenue which it promised to reinvest in green infrastructure, as the companies that do cut emmisions are benefited

its a briliant idea
