Marina and the Diamonds cynical about artists who pander LGBT community

"I was cynical about it,” the 29-year-old admits. “I felt that people in pop… express themselves in that way for calculated means because they know the gay fan base is extremely loyal and extremely expressive and is a tastemaker demographic.”

And before you bash her:

"The Brit is grateful, however, to have a loyal gay following (“it is a really enjoyable factor for me… because it makes the shows a lot more fun”) and understands why her music connects with members of the LGBT community. “A lot of the reason I think I have a gay fan base is because a lot of the themes, and the core of the songs, are usually stemming from something to do with identity or acceptance

Personally, this seems directed at Nick Jonas. Is there any kind of date or article for when she said this?

Fair enough. I mean, like any market the gays are a group that can be targeted and exploited for sales. There's nothing wrong with being a little suspicious that there are people/artists in the industry who simply use the gay community for their own gain rather than being genuinely connected to them.

With good reason.

Nobody in pop talked about the gay community so publically like Gaga and once she did, in all her fame and glory, other little pop starlets started pushing a calculated emphasis on the gay community. Even Beyonce and Britney had never really acknowledged their gay followings.

That is, of course, until their labels realized it's part of the reason why Lady Gaga lost popularity with the GP.

You can "exploit the gay public" anytime you want but only if you do it right actively supporting the cause and respecting the community, like Gaga does. Don't be a fake b---h that looks like a diva because "the gays like divas" and put gay kisses in your videos to get dat controversy.

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

Honestly I could care less about exploitation as long as they're still pairing it with awareness.

Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

He was the first person I thought of :gum:. Marina, social justice queen :legend:

Frankly I dislike how generalized this assertion was, because I see people like Gaga, Cindy Lauper, Madonna, who truly connect and care about the LGBT community. And it happened in a spontaneous way, so not everyone is as calculated as Marina supposes...

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

What Gaga does is different. She advocates she doesn't try and milk us for every dollar. (Praying I'm right )

When she said this:

"On Twitter, I don't really like it when I see loads of messages from an artist saying (talks in baby voice) "I love you guys! I love you guys! I love you guys!" because I don't think there's any kind of intelligence in that. Also, how can you be genuine and say that so many times? Maybe that's when it becomes pandering, when you're dumbing down your fan base"

I agree....after and during BTW era, songs from Kesha, Pink, Katy, etc were all "gay acceptance" songs...

Anyone can be "pandering" to a certain group based on changing genres (Taylor/Gaga) and image (Justin/Miley)

The difference is that Gaga is openly bi, is a very known gay activist that actually do things that bring real discussion for the cause and is paying a very high price for being true to herself and out and about about her gay fandom during the BTW era :awkney:

If this is directed at Gaga, she is a fool for letting her mouth run. She is no one to decide whether Gaga is being genuine or not.

But, yeah, Gaga is really the only one who talks about her fans like that. Marina sure does have a lot of opinions about how other artists decide to interact with their music and fans. Lol

This is why I stan for Gaga. She doesn't bad mouth other artists behind their backs and if she says something shady, she explicitly says after that she doesn't like to dictate what's right or wrong in art and music. (And I mean in interviews, not in tweets she probably made while she was taking a dump)
