Tycho 3,694
so we can call each other niggers? [sarcasm] I'm white and grew up in a suburban neighbourhood and I used to call my other white friends niggers when you know... they were being niggers! "Aw man, I can't afford that this week" "Don't be such a ******!" Unless it's being used to offend a black person, what's the big deal? [/sarcasm] Using a word that's used to oppress and devalue someone shouldn't be okay to use just because the community it's not attached to use it as a replacement word. You can't take an already incredibly offensive word and put a weaker attachment to it and call it okay. It promoting the wrong message to give to people. Not coming for you Yanko, using what you said to strengthen my response to the video Admin posted
Bette Davis 12,742
Oh lord Björk, I understand the point of what she is trying to say but there are many other metaphors that would have done the job without using such a heavy, negative word. I think she was trying to be artsy, edgy with this quote and doesn't realize how negatively charged that word still is for many Americans. If people, no matter their background, feel offended they should be able to speak up and/or defend someone else and not be blasted as inauthentic Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet. RedHotAndBlue 12
Racism is discrimination of a person because of their race.Racism IS NOT "cultural appropriation", or even just a word used in a non-malicious way. Get over yourselves. twinks.

I agree with your point that she is not necessarily being racist, but you can't blame people for being upset/uncomfortable with the n word. Its not " just a word." Also, calling everyone twinks? Really?! a) not everyone on here is a twink - stop stereotyping b) you say it like its an insult Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet.

Whispering 18,865
Empathy is genuine caring. 90% of the people who are OUTRAGED do not really care about black people's rights, the main reason for their OUTRAGE is that it's the cool thing to do now.Bonus fact: Bjork said the exact same thing in 2001: http://www.bjork.fr/SpinEmpathy is understanding what others are feeling because you have experienced it yourself or can put yourself in their shoes. I would imagine that many here can relate to issues that involve discrimination and bigotry. And seriously....what would be so wrong with outrage against bigotry being "cool"? I'm having a hard time with thinking of this as a negative. Wouldn't the world be a better place, if there was more outrage over bigotry and discrimination?
