Supersonic 49,376
Acts like a monkey? What is it that you been smoking? He portrays the man that Sinterklaas freed from slavery and out of gratitude the man decided to stay with him. He is seen as a positive figure handing out kids toys and candies. Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet are like Batman and Robin.Cultural anthropology major here. "Zwarte Piet" has no "origin", similar to all customs and traditions everywhere in the world. Hence there are thousands of stories/explanations/excuses about the origin of "Zwarte Piet". This one I haven't heard about yet though. The "He just slided down the chimney with Sinterklaas got a lil dirt on his face" excuse is way more common. If Zwarte Piet was such a positive figure, there would be no black people protesting about it, and there are plenty every year.Zwarte Piet is a white man in black face, speaking broken dutch for a humerous effect while acting like a clown in a ridiculous attire. That was applicable in the 80s but even Zwarte Piet evolved. Anyhow not gonna go further into detail and off topic. I am not a man, gay or black woman. MJHolland 12,725
I fail to see how "appropriation" of any culture ever is a problem. If I start popping out babies from random fathers and start collecting food stamps from the government that doesn't mean those black women can't also do the same thing. Cry me a f*cking river. Fanta 5,019
The ignorance in this thread obviously you all think this cultural appropriation talk is irrelevant to you, and is far fetched, because you're the ones having fun with it. You're the ones at fault. Do I even have to bring up the whole coco Oreo shaniqua thread whatever the f*ck it was called...it's actually disgusting. And now you guys won't even listen to the other side of the story, because it's 'stupid and annoying'. Ok. Girl you know the gays on this board (and I'm gay too) think only their struggles matter therefore everyone else is stupid, annoying for discussing their part of the story and so on. For a fanbase and group that preaches so much about equality, respect, and acceptance you all sound ignorant as F*CK in here. Seriously, how old are some of you? Sableye 574
Appropriation happens when a dominant group steals something from a minority. Both black and gays are minorities. It's not appropriation.
Redstreak 6,653
Let's not act like there aren't gay males who do stereotype black women as their "true self." It may not be as prevalent as before but it is still a thing Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~
Redstreak 6,653
Not every gay/bis-xual man is like Laganja Estranja. Since black people suffer so much from stereotypes I'm disgusted every time they use them against us. I'm so over being lumped with conservative racist white America just because I share a ****ing skin color with them. If you truly believe that's what people are saying/implying then you're not even trying to understand the conversation Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

Petie Estie 5,707
i thought everyone knew this but chose to ignore how problematic it is because it's fun. Maybe people are still ignorant. Anyway...this is why that coco and whatever thread is racist. Call your therapist...it's Petie Estie
ChicaSkas 24,040
I really agree, the lack of proper spelling and the snarky attitudes... you can't walk into a thread without reading half-baked Ebonics. uo111 5,282
This thread is full of racism. This argument is full or stereotyping. And people are applauding it. People who "hate" stereotyping. Do people just not realize they are hypocrites? Or do they just not care? That's my question.
uo111 5,282
Because it's not an issue you have to deal with, so it's easier for you to perceive it as a load of pressed people whining over nothing and be ignorant Straight people have pretty obviously been appropriating gay culture. It's just that, no one cares...
