Gay Men, Stop Appropriating Black Women!

According to the NUS Women Conference document, Motion 512’s supporters believe that the “appropriation of Black women by white gay men is prevalent within the LGBT scene and community.” It states that this appropriation is found in the “emulation of the mannerisms, language (particularly AAVE- African American Vernacular English) and phrases that can be attributed to Black women.” Furthermore, the NUS Women’s Campaign motion supporters find it offensive when white gay men say they have an “inner black woman.” The motion claims that white gay men “benefit from both white privilege and male privilege.”

The NUS Women’s Conference’s motion would work with the NUS LGBT Campaign and the public in order to stop white gay men from appropriating activities, mannerisms, speech, and dress that is claimed by black women

A similar article was posted awhile on here and I disagree with a lot about what is said. This thread will be a powder keg

This whole culture is going in such a wrong direction, by over-a--lyzing stuff like this, racism will never go away, and we'll never be all equal

and? sass & mannerisms are to do with attitude not race, if this is the case then straight boys & fans should stop using our gay terminology, they should stop using our dress sense & stop using "alleged bis-xuality" to further themselves in popularity.

And how are we privileged if we can't get married in most places, are seen as less than heteros-xual men, seen as a status item by girls, get stigmatized with spreading AIDs & can't even show affection in public without someone scoffing at us

EDIT: they also seem to forget that a large majority of the US now has anti-LGBT laws for people to refuse service to LGBT people & some are even trying to pass a law for legal murder based on religious belief that gays are disgusting. these things are just as bad as anti-race specific laws from centuries ago

We're a minority whom the majority of us accept others, so why can't they do the same :madge:

i swear lately african-americans assume they invented or own everything in white culture.

It's not any more far-fetched than transgenderism (and there is a wing of feminism, now deeply unpopular, that dismissed male to female transgender on similar grounds).

A bit odd that most of what is regarded as "black women" sass, actually originated from Ball culture(Paris is Burning), which was a popular underground LGBT movement and drag culture :emma: So, did it really even belong to black women to begin with, maybe gay men/drag queens are actually the ones being culturally appropriated here :hunty:

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn

"The motion claims that white gay men “benefit from both white privilege and male privilege.”"

That's their issue? Well go ahead and try and take away their privilege cuz it makes so much sense.

so only black women can talk that way? Since when did someone own a language style? I don't even really understand what is so bad about appropriation all the time. I mean.....if we really wanted to talk about appropriation look at EVERY female in the game since 1940. It didn't matter if those girls were black, white, hispanic, asian, or whatever......they all had a gay backstage telling them what was cool. Everyone from Madonna to Beyonce to Lady Gaga to Britney Spears has appropriated gay culture and usually we celebrate it, why are these black girls getting all pressed? It's usually because we admire them.

Why Is Every Word In The Title Of This Thread With A Capital?

I actually prefer thread titles like that, but that's just a trivial detail I suppose.

On topic, this was big in the news, or at least on the internet, about 6 months or so ago. Cultural/sub-cultural appropriation is a massive talking point and the reason for a lot of discussions. I don't think I know enough on the subject to comment as of yet, so I'll stay in my lane.

Why Is Every Word In The Title Of This Thread With A Capital?

You can either use a capital letter for the beginning of each word or only the first word, both ways are grammatically correct. Stay on topic.
