I understand, but then once someone has reclaimed a word is it really okay to feel offended by the word if someone else attempts to use it against you? Since you now call yourself a slut then why would it matter when someone else called you one?

Personally I don't feel the need to go around saying I'm a ******* or calling other gays *******s to feel secure. However, I also don't get offended when someone calls me one now. When I was just a kid, yeah it hurt being bullied before I even knew I was bi. Then I grew up and accepted who I was. Now it doesn't affect who I am. So maybe the issue is just people accepting themselves and knowing themselves. It also comes down to accepting the fact not everyone in the world is going to accept and like you. That is the reality of the world we live in. Instead of focusing on everyone else's perception of your s-xuality or your race, first focus on your own. Find the peace within so you can share peace with the world. Maybe that way one day the world will be a peaceful place.

Why does it matter? Because my entire life, let alone my entire generation, has been oppressed by men through the use of words like slut and *****? That's why it matters. If it comes from me, it's okay. I'm taking it and throwing it back in everyone's faces. If I say it to my girlfriend, we're in this together. It's my way of saying yo I know you've been through this too. Let's take a stand, we're better than this.

the issue is so much more than 'not everybody's going to like you' - the fact is that generally society is racist, it is s-xist and homophobic and transphobic.

I'm getting a bit off topic do you guys know what "White Flight" is? Americans probably know, but non-Americans probably have never heard of this. It's: "White flight is a term that originated in the United States, starting in the mid-20th century, and applied to the large-scale migration of whites of various European ancestries from racially mixed urban regions to more racially homogeneous suburban or exurban regions."

The creation of those nice American suburbs you see on TV. Predominantly white. High income, well educated people.

Urban areas used to be filled with whites and other immigrants. Now all the high earning whites usually live in the outskirts of the city in their model neighborhoods. I personally think this is important because although it's not something racist, it's a form of unofficial segregation that has stemmed from economic prosperity.

Basically, money is the final form of segregation. The rich and poor will never integrate. It's been like that forever. And now it's become race based since a lot of whites have prospered through generations. It makes you think just how much have we REALLY integrated? (In the US, of course).

I probably sound like a lunatic but I hope you understand what I'm saying. It's just an observation I've made.

They could have phrased it better by not generalizing all gay people, yes.

What I don't agree with is the "stop whining and being overly sensitive" part. People are hurt, they have something to say. It may not affect you, but there are voices and they MUST be heard. Only by talking about issues like these we can take a step towards a more tolerant world, a world where individuality is embraced and not mocked, or stolen in this case.

I agree with you completely. I regret saying "stop whining" and "overly sensitive". I removed those from my op. Completely unfair on my part. Thanks for calling me out in a thoughtful manner :kissga:

I think the point I was just trying to make were 1) I don't appreciate stereotypes - I think this movement is stereotyping both African American Women (its lumping them all into one group/culture, when there are so many different types of unique African American women) and Gay Males. We both have enough stereotypes shoved on us

Ok. I finished reading it all.

This may get messy but bear with me, I am aware that I am a foreigner and that while I should probably stay in my lane, I'm not going to :hills:

Right here I go.

I understand, and accept that there are certain things gay culture has taken from black women, however let's be honest here it's not just the white men, it's gay men in general. You can't blame the white guys when the latinos, blacks, asians, monsters, indians, whatever else is out there guys are doing it as well. I believe this is where the problem is stemming from, blaming white gays exclusively is only going to make them feel like they are being targeted, even though this applies to all gay men who do the whole "Acting like a black woman" thing.

Also, you can talk about white male privilege as much as you want, but at the end of the day if Bob is gay then he is going to get just as much flak for being who and what he is than any other minority, if not more depending on where they live.

I'm not saying the white privilege isn't there, I'm simply pointing out that being gay instantly makes you minority, whether you're white, black, indigo or burgundy. Are there privileges to being a white homos-xual man? Well I mean, please tell me, what are the perks to being gay full-stop? You're not as good as a straight man in the eyes of society, you may face homophobia at work, if they even hire you in the first place, you can't donate blood once you've lost your virginity in some countries, you can't get married everywhere, in some countries you will get hanged for just being who and what you are. I can go on but I think (hope) my point has been made.

Now, as for the core issue in this thread, I say no.

Why? Because minorities should not be fighting each other. Minorities already experience so many difficulties as is from the majority, and fighting for equality and to put an end to discrimination, do we really need to cause tension and difficulties between each other as well? No we don't.

Yes the gays acting like stereotypical black women are annoying, yes I understand some black women can be offended and some are offended, but I ask you, what are we going to do? You can't make certain phrases, attitudes, words, etc. exclusive to a particular culture or race or gender. You can't force people to stop acting the way they do, it's sad but it's true.

I concede to the fact that homos-xuals do borrow and take phrases or what have you, from black women, and I apologise if I have ever done it, but it is unrealistic to actually expect everyone to allow one culture, one gender, one race to be the only ones allowed to act or speak a certain way. This goes against what all minorities are fighting for because that's not equality. That's privilege.

I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that Homos-xual Men (and the LGBT as a whole) and African Americans have a lot of work to do, a lot of people to educate and a lot of stuff to work on in their own respective communities to be fighting over how certain members of another community acts. This is doing nothing to help either causes, one need only read through the thread to see how the African American community's reputation has been damaged by this. Also, one need only watch the video to see how White Gay Men's reputations have been affected.

I agree that it is an issue, and appropriation is a bad thing that is common today, but in this particular case, I just don't see how it can be addressed. I also don't see why white gay men are especially being targeted, and I don't understand why I wrote so much dayum this one ugly wall of text :messga:

I really hope I didn't offend anyone with this post, that was not my intention, I'm simply struggling to find a solution to this issue and feel it has been handled poorly by both parties. Again, I hope I haven't offended anybody.

but if I did, that's not my issue

so if I see a black woman/man talking like a white person and dressing like a white person he/she is appropiatimg white culture? Please, feel proud that both cultures are being mixed and becoming one, no walls, no difference. Saying that you are promoting a difference between white and black, is that what you want?

Why do I roll my eyes whenever I see the word 'appropriation' lately?

One second I'm a troll, then suddenly the troll is me.

Very true. Solving these issues and uniting would be the ideal outcome of this situation. We really don't need two minorities fighting each other while the majority is thinking of how to get rid of both of us. :ohno:

Because it's not an issue you have to deal with, so it's easier for you to perceive it as a load of pressed people whining over nothing and be ignorant :awesome:

I agree with 95% of what he said tbh.
And now I'm laying back enjoying the show, you don't see karma hit that hard every day, I remember when most of the gays were laughing and supporting the media on bashing Iggy for "approaching black culture" and dragging her left and right; I feel blessed to live long enough to witness the real reversed warholian expedition.

Paper Planes

Are people just bored and need something to complain about constantly nowadays? Everything is racist, homophobic, transphobic, heterophobic, s-xist, "ageist," etc. with this Tumblr-activist generation :laughga:

There are many things out there that are racist/homophobic/discrimatory/whatever, but talking with sass is not one of them. I would say that black women and all gays in general both fall in this sass stereotype. Who is to say that one group stole the idea from the other when they both have placed in the same stereotype for a long while?

Yeah because Europe in general is completely oblivious about anything insensitive they do. If u ain't Dutch or are interested in cultural studies you probably have never heard about Zwarte Piet, the white sidekick of Santa Claus in black face that acts like a monkey.

Acts like a monkey? What is it that you been smoking? He portrays the man that Sinterklaas freed from slavery and out of gratitude the man decided to stay with him. He is seen as a positive figure handing out kids toys and candies. Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet are like Batman and Robin.
