 the fact that "black culture" exists based off of certain phrases and gestures is ludicrous at best. If you're going to cry foul at people saying that all black people use those phrases and gestures or talk like this, etc. than don't complain about it being your culture that others are appropriating. you can't have it both ways. this particular argument is purely based on stereotypes and has shaky reasoning.

While she made some valid and interesting points, I think she overreacted a bit. Concerning the Ball Room Scene, which is were a lot of the words used today come from, she implied that it belonged to black culture because there was a majority of black men and women. They still belonged to the LGBT community so it still makes it part of LGBT history (which includes white and black people). I don't know, I think that it belongs to both cultures so both communities should be allowed to use it.

Did anyone in the thread purport such an idea? People have an issue with stereotyping and caricaturing a culture, not genuinely appreciating and participating in a foreign culture. But please, jump into the middle of the debate with your snark.

So the only way to keep the peace is through blissful ignorance? That if a majority was to do something that was regarded as problematic by a minority they should just accept it as life so as not to make the group in power uncomfortable?

​What I mean is that in Canada and many European countries most blacks are recent immigrants (often Africans who were never enslaved). It would be nice if we could start fresh without importing the whole AMERICAN history of slavery, segregation, the KKK, historical bitterness, and white guilt into our racial consciousness and relations. But US culture and media is so hegemonic, it's hard to avoid. And it's often white leftists who import that baggage, not the local minority. 

For example, the black fave taboo is an American thing, in response to an American history of minstrel shows, yet it's belated importation into Holland has wrecked havoc with Dutch Xmas customs (Black Pete).
