It could happen if the head of Russian Railways has his way.

According to a March 23 report in The Siberian Times, Russian Railways president Vladimir Yakunin has proposed a plan for a massive trans-Siberian highway that would link his country's eastern border with the U.S. state of Alaska, crossing a narrow stretch of the Bering Sea that separates Asia and North America.

The scheme was unveiled at a meeting of the Moscow-based Russian Academy of Science.

Dubbed the Trans-Eurasian Belt Development (TEPR), the project calls for a major roadway to be constructed alongside the existing Trans-Siberian Railway, along with a new train network and oil and gas pipelines.

"This is an inter-state, inter-civilization, project," the Siberian Times quoted Yakunin. "The project should be turned into a world 'future zone,' and it must be based on leading, not catching, technologies."

What's wrong with taking a plane?  Wouldn't this make it a lot easier to smuggle stuff from country to country?

Yes. Let's wreck the environment, make crime easier, and waste billions upon billions of dollars towards a project that wouldn't be economical to the average middle-class citizen anyways.

The only country that would profit from this is Russia   What's the actual point of this? There are already good highways in Europe, and probably in North America too (?). It's just a mess in Russia, because it's so large.

​I meant the construction itself. This is not your normal run of the mill street to construct, this is like at least a million tons of asphalt and metal to deal with and cranes and all those other machines... Like, it would be cheaper, cleaner and easier to just stick with airplanes.

This sounds really cool, but it would cost an inhumane amount of money to make possible and to travel it. It takes over 3 days alone to cross the US via train. To go from NY to London on this would take weeks.

If there are trains avross both countries, it will be romantic and super posh like Orient Express train across accross Europe.  

But nope, it is just make spying easier between both countries, we know US and Russia are standing on opposite political views, our history with Russia isn't picture perfect
