The United States is coordinating closely with Saudi Arabia and regional allies in the military action against Houthi rebels in Yemen, including providing intelligence and logistical support, the White House said Wednesday.

 

“President Obama has authorized the provision of logistical and intelligence support to GCC-led military operations,” National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said in a statement, referring to the Gulf Cooperation Council.

 

Saudi Arabia carried out air strikes against the Houthi rebels on Wednesday, launching an operation by a regional coalition to save the government of embattled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi as the country teeters on the brink of civil war.

 

Condemning the Houthi rebels, a Shiite militia that launched a power takeover in the Yemeni capital Sanaa in February, Meehan said Washington had also been in close contact with the embattled Hadi. 

 

U.S. forces were not taking direct military action in Yemen, she stressed, but were “establishing a Joint Planning Cell with Saudi Arabia to coordinate US military and intelligence support.”

 

“We strongly urge the Houthis to halt immediately their destabilizing military actions and return to negotiations as part of the political dialogue,” added Meehan.

 

“The international community has spoken clearly through the UN Security Council and in other fora that the violent takeover of Yemen by an armed faction is unacceptable and that a legitimate political transition -- long sought by the Yemeni people -- can be accomplished only through political negotiations and a consensus agreement among all of the parties.”

The UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan have deployed fighter jets to join the Saudi air force in the ongoing air campaign against Yemen’s Houthi rebels, Al Arabiya News Chanel reported.

 

The UAE has deployed 30 fighter jets, Bahrain 15, Kuwait 15, Qatar 10 and Jordan 6 warplanes, according to the news channel.

Pakistan and Egypt are also taking part in the military campaign, contribution with air and naval forces.

 

Al Arabiya said Egypt, Pakistan and Sudan have also expressed readiness to contribute ground troops against the Houthis.

Warships move in key strait as airstrikes widen in Yemen

Saudi and Egyptian warships deployed Friday to the Bab al-Mandab strait off Yemen to secure the strategic sea passage, Egyptian military officials said, as a Saudi-led coalition widened their airstrikes on the second day of an air campaign against Shiite rebels and their allies, aiming to pave the way for possible ground operations.

 

A top priority for the campaign after the air campaign was weakened the rebels is for coalition troops -likely Egyptians - to move into the southern port city of Aden, a main stronghold of supporters of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who was forced to leave the country as the rebels and their allies moved on Aden, Yemeni and Egyptian military officials said.

 

That could prove a tough prospect. On Friday, rebel fighters and their allies - military units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh - were moving through southern Abyan province toward Aden, aiming to reinforce their fighters already in the city, Yemeni security officials said. At the same time, pro-Hadi military units and militiamen were fighting rebel forces in street battles in several southern cities on Friday.

U.S. lawmakers of both parties reiterated their support for the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen against Houthi rebels on Friday.

 

“I applaud the Saudis for taking this action to protect their homeland and to protect their own neighborhood,” House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, said at a news conference. “If America leads, our allies in the region would be tickled to death and would be happy to join a coalition. But America has to lead.”

 

The statements of support come after similar comments by the Obama administration.

 

Republican senators John McCain, and Lindsey Graham respectively chairmen of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Foreign Aid spending panel, gave similar views.

 

“Saudi Arabia and our Arab partners deserve our support as they seek to restore order in Yemen, which has collapsed into civil war,” the two officials said in a joint statement. “We understand why our Saudi and other Arab partners felt compelled to take action. The prospect of radical groups like Al-Qaeda, as well as Iranian-backed militants, finding safe haven on the border of Saudi Arabia was more than our Arab partners could withstand.”

 

The Obama administration has said it is providing “logistical and intelligence support” for the operations.

Meanwhile, the United States has confirmed that it would fight “with all its might” anyone who attacks Saudi Arabia and Riyadh has been informed of this, Al Arabiya News Channel reported on Friday.
