Stephen Sondheim slams Lady Gaga's 'Sound of Music' performance, Oscars producer slams back

Legend Julie Andrews loved and appreciated Gaga's performance (I loved it too btw), so his opinion doesn't matter to me. :bye:

If he and whoever else didn't like it, that's their damn problem. It's already happened. Get over it.

Maybe he's going deaf and/or senile?

(Also not her Oscars performance STILL being talked about weeks later :whitney:)

I mean, so what if she sang it in a "semi-operatic" way?

Calling it a travesty is a complete exaggeration and he used it simply to insult her performance.

It it captivated her audience and that's really all that matters. Sorry old guy whose repertoire means absolutely nothing to me.

Pretty sure if it wasn't good then Julie wouldn't have praised her as much as she has but alright

He's entitled to his opinion but I entirely disagree. Many people were moved to feeling emotional by her performance. I certainly was... and i dont think it was that "operatic" coming from a person who is an avid fan of both operas and musicals :emma:. Gaga sings that "operatic" often, it just doesn't translate well into Pop music. She wasn't hitting stratospheric high notes or low notes or showing off that aspect, she was simply giving a tribute to a song from a musical. I also felt she gave plenty of emotion and conviction and sold the performance in both her movements and facial expressions. I just entirely disagree

Goodluck next time Sondheim :sis:

Stephen Sondheim said that.   Coming from him, that's brutal, but he has the right to give his opinion.  He's revered and more than qualified..

Julie Andrews loved it.  That's all that counts in the end.  But I just don't see the need for him to go that far commenting on an Oscar performance that ultimately still sounded beautiful, whether it was his cup of tea or not..

What an exaggeration on his part. It was a tribute to Julie Andrews and Julie sang them EXACTLY the same way. Julie herself loved it, and got quite emotional. Achievements or not, I hate these older guys who bash new talent because it doesn't conform to a style that they agree with.

ITA. She really did well in that regard. He's acting like she just stood there and sang it without emotion (if that's what he's getting at by saying she "didn't show a relationship to the lyrics"). Even people who dislike Gaga are saying they got teary-eyed, so I think the performance did it's job on an emotional level even if those people aren't accomplished like he is.

Who cares what this conceited queen says. He's only naval gazing and inflating his own ego.

OhOh, one of the best things you've seen recently is your own play is it, Stephen? Yes dear, now drink your champagne.
