Why compare 1989 to Prism though (which came out last year by the way)? If we're going to play the comparison game, then let's be fair and just say that Taylor has outsold pretty much everyone, not just Katy.

NOT her second week sales possibly still being a higher week than any other first week this year besides her own

1989's 1st and 2nd weeks annihilate all other album sales weeks in 2014.
Shake It Off is #1 while her album is doing all of this.
Shake It Off is one of her biggest hits to date, and her longest running #1.
Shake It Off opened with the biggest digital single sales week of 2014. The only above 500K.
Shake It Off has spawned numerous viral parodies and videos.
Shake It Off video is already approaching 300M views.
Shake It Off & Taylor's music catalog being taken off Spotify prompted an entire discussion about the future of the platform.
Blank Space is projected to sell 400K+ next week in a weaker market and not as a lead single.
Blank Space music video is smashing VEVO.
It's very likely that Taylor will have BOTH of the #1 and #2 positions on the Hot 100 next week, while her album will probably still be #1 and approaching 2 million sales in less than a month.
1989 album tracks are still charting relatively high on iTunes.

I want people to have songs that I write stuck in their heads, but I don’t want it to absolutely perturb them that they have the song stuck in their head. I’m talking about songs that sound like they were cooked up in a lab. Like, anything that makes you think there are eight songwriters on this.

WHO is she talking about? :fan:

This would go under Conversation Area or Taylor's thread in the Music section because it's not entertainment news

I don't think she means anyone, I think she's just speaking in general

Can we also talk about this excerpt from the interview? :legend: I love how everything done is what SHE wants, not the label

With 1989, I was really putting my neck on the line, because I was the one saying I need to change directions musically. And my label and management were the ones saying “Are you sure, are you positive? This is risky.†And I was the one who had to come back every time and say, “No, this is what we’re doing.†When I put forth an album cover that didn’t have half my face on it, and tried to convince my label that this was the best way to sell an album, you know, I got some kind of interesting side-glance looks. But I knew that this was the best cover to represent this record, because I wanted there to be an air of mystery. I didn’t want people to know the emotional DNA of this album. I didn’t want them to see a smiling picture on the cover and think this was a happy album, or see a sad-looking facial expression and think, oh, this is another breakup record. When I wanted to call the album 1989, people on the team questioned that. Every single element of this album has been called into question, and I’ve had to say “No, this is how we’re doing it.†And the fact that we came out and did the kind of numbers we did in the first weekâ€â€you have no idea how relieved I was, because it was all on me if this didn’t work. It was a little hard to sleep the night of the album release.

As Taylor Swift nears to 100 million US career record sales (she can top it as early as next week), here's the recap of Taylor's chart and sales milestones in the US brought by 1989 and its hit singles:

- Lead single "Shake It Off" (SIO) is the 22nd song to debut at #1 on the Billboard HOT 100 chart, with the 4th biggest first-week digital sales in history

- SIO made the biggest debut (#12) on Mainstream Top 40 radio in history, tying herself with Mariah Carey

- SIO also made the biggest debut (#9) on Adult Pop Songs radio; also made the fastest climb to #1 (6th week), a tie with Celine Dion

- 1989 became the 19th album to sell at least a million in a single week; the biggest sales week since Eminem (2002)

- 1989 made Taylor Swift (TS) the first in history to debut (or move) an album with at least one million copies in a single week, three consecutive times, all during this decade

- 1989 made TS the 2nd female artist to score at least 3 #1 albums in the 2010s (after Lady Gaga), the first female artist as a solo, and the 8th overall

- 1989 hit the 2 million mark in album sales by its 3rd week, the fastest since 50 Cent (2005)

- 1989 made TS the first artist with back-to-back albums (2012's Red - 2014's 1989) that each spent their first three weeks at #1 since Eminem (2000's MM LP - 2002's The Eminem Show)

- 2nd single "Blank Space" (BS) replaces SIO at the #1 spot of the HOT 100, making TS the first female artist in history to succeed herself at the top spot and the 10th overall

- BS makes TS the first and only act in history to replace herself at the top of the HOT 100 chart (1958-present) entirely as a solo artist without any collaboration; the second overall on Billboard's main singles charts since Elvis Presley (1956)

- BS pushes TS among the acts with the 3rd-most #1s in this decade so far, tying herself with Adele, Eminem, and Kesha

- BS makes "1989" as the 7th album in the 2010s to send its first two released singles to #1 on the HOT 100, and the 7th album by a female artist since the 2000s to do so, following Christina Aguilera (1999-2000), Beyonce (2003), Lady Gaga (2009), Katy Perry (2010), Rihanna (2010), Adele (2011), and the 18th artist overall

- BS makes "1989" the first album in 2014 to score multiple #1 singles on the HOT 100; it's also Swift's first album to collect multiple #1 singles

- 1989 has established Taylor Swift as the undisputed top-selling solo act of the Digital Era with at least 99.5M record sales (24.6M albums, 74.9M digital tracks) since her debut in 2006
