lego 44,165 Posted February 27, 2015 Share Posted February 27, 2015 When a group of vandals decided to paint racist graffiti on a Hindu temple in the town of Bothell, Washington, they chose to add insult to injury with an image of a Swastika. They presumably did not realise that the design has been an ancient and sacred symbol in Hindu culture long before it was misappropriated by the Nazis in 1920s Germany. Members of the Hindu temple in Bothell arrived on Sunday morning to find a Swastika and the words "get out" scrawled on the building. "The Bothell Hindu temple has been here for more than 20 years and we have never had any issues," worshipper Sriram Subramaian told local news site Komo News."I have no idea, I was surprised," Mr Sriram said.The vandals also targeted Skyview Middle School on Sunday morning, just two blocks away from a Hindu temple.They wrote "Muslims get out" in red paint on the school building.The identity of the vandal or vandals is not yet known.The swastika has been an important symbol for thousands of years among Hindus and Buddhists in India and other Asian countries, and was also used in Ancient Greece, and by the Celts.Ireland's Book of Kells contains a Swastika shaped decoration and the symbol was also associated with the god Thor in Norse mythology.Among different cultures, it variously represents life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.The word itself comes from two Sanskrit phrases which together mean 'well-being'.The symbol's association with the Nazi regime continues to haunt Germany where it is illegal to display or reproduce it. This post-war law got one council into trouble late last year when horrified locals tweeted photographs of a new pedestrian zone with a perfectly paved red-brick Swastika. Not that they would vandalize, but that they would be so unimaginative and small in their plans to vandalize. Like, is that all they've got? Hardly seems hate filled.
