VIDEO: Egyptian student walks streets of Milan dressed as a Muslim

A student in Italy dressed in traditional Arabic clothing appears to have been the subject of a string of derogatory comments as the public’s reaction to his appearance was caught on camera.

Hamdy Mahisen, who is of Egyptian origin, attracted stares and insults as he walked around Milan for five hours, while holding a Koran in one hand and prayer beads in the other for a social experiment.

On a high street, someone sneers “Taliban s***†while, even more disturbingly, a woman pushing a pram with a baby in it seems to turn around as he walks by her to shout: “Taliban!â€

Italy is currently on high-alert after a warning that Libyan militants inspired by Isis could make their way into Europe through the country.

This has fuelled Islamophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment towards refugees who have fled Africa before setting off on treacherous journeys across the Mediterranean to Italy in unsafe and overcrowded boats.

Groups of teenage girls and boys do not hide their astonishment at the sight of his appearance and openly stare, laugh and turn round to look at him in the footage as he walks past.

A person within a small group of young men, in the video also published yesterday by Italian newspaper Repubblica, says “guys, you just missed the imam.â€

Thirty-year-old Hamdy, who speaks Italian fluently and lives in the city with his parents, was dressed in a traditional long white cotton robe commonly worn by mainly Muslim men in Arab countries – and not just imams – with a white cap.

While passing through an indoor shopping piazza, someone could be heard saying “s***, have you seen the Isis?â€

A man standing near Hamdy at a tramstop makes the remark: “Look, he has got the Koran. Think he’s got a gun under his tunic?â€

The comments are indicative of the levels of Islamophobia and racism that Muslims and those from other ethnicities can encounter in Italy.

This just shows how much intolerance there is today. Sad.

But I couldn't hear half the things that appeared on the transcriptions

Why do people dress up religious and go to public space looking for reactions? Isn't religion something that should be kept private? Why would you tell EVERYONE that you love God? Why does it matter? Why be such an attention wh0re?

Dressing up religiously should be banned. /thread /life

Probably asking the wrong person, I never mentioned about that. I said no one should be allowed to dress up religiously.

I actually just did a paper on Islamophobia and how the West is letting it escalate to frightening levels which should not exist in the first place. This would have been a great add on to my resources used

Can you blame people for being scared? im not defending the hate, im just saying. It's stereotyping.. people stereotype all sharks to kill any human on first sight because of one movie concept, when that's not the case. It's the same here :emma:

Pointless video.

Now I would like to see the same kind of video with a Priest or a Nun in an Islamic city (like Teheran or Islamabad) or a woman dressed with a very short skirt and small top and a large necked walking in a Islamic city alone.

Maybe you should also read how other religions are treated in the not Western World. I always see you bragging about Islam, but never about Judaism or Christianity where followers have it way more difficult than followers of Islam in the Western World.

You won't even able to things like that in cities like this. But of course it's always the evil West.

Ofcourse I'm against all of this, and think it should stop. But let's not act like any of those Arab countries are any better with other religions or way of dressing. Although lebanon is quite open-minded since I've visited there (I'm originally Lebanese) so I don't know about the rest.

EDIT: I'm not trying to justify the actions of the people in the video. I think it's horrible, and it should definitely stop.

Yep, I heard Lebanon is the open mindest one. But 9 of the top 10 worst countries for Christians is muslim.

I don't get why. It's so stupid, tbh. I have this Muslim African teacher that chooses to discard everything Christians say. Me and him always get into huge arguments. He's always trashing Christians with the "no god but allah" bull****. And I just get sick of it. I end up winning the arguements :gaga:

There are a lot of nice Muslims, though

I'm actually born Muslim, but I don't follow it. I don't even know if I believe in God :laughga: But that doesn't give me any right to trash anyone's religion, and I respect everyone.

Saying 'Arab countries would do the same/worse' entirely evades the point of this.

We are countries that encourage religious freedom and acceptance, allowing people to express themselves without fear of persecution. This man for wearing his religious attire has been berated, abused and accused of being a terrorist... which entirely undermines our principles as accepting people and makes us no better than the countries you're trying to flaunt as 'worse than us'.

You should be appauled stuff like this is happening in Europe where we should know better than this, because you damn well would be if it was hurling homophobic remarks rather than Islamaphobia.

A terrorist is defined by his actions, not his clothes / religion / race.

I know if i continue reading some of the comments here i'll just end up getting a few warning points, but i'll leave it at that.
