Apparently everyone forgot Lady Gaga is a really, really talented singer?

Maybe it’s the wigs and the crazy outfits. Maybe it’s the meat dresses and the being carried in an egg and all that blood. Whatever it is, people seem to have forgotten that first and foremost Gaga is an insanely talented singer. But they remembered tonight.

Gaga’s secret performance at the Academy Awards turned out to be a tribute to The Sound of Music for its 50th anniversary. She took the stage for a very toned down medley of “The Sound of Music, “My Favorite Things, “Edelweiss and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.

VH1:

Lady Gaga lives for the applause, and she earned all of the praise she got â€â€ including the one from Julie Andrews herself â€â€ for her performance tonight. Maybe she’s still coming down from the high of her Grammy performance with Tony Bennett or maybe that heart-shaped engagement ring from fiancé Taylor Kinney is giving her power.

Either way, Gaga’s performance tonight showed her many talents. The woman who brought us “Bad Romance and “Paparazzi can sing in a wide variety of styles, and they all sound good on her.

The most surprising moment of the 87th Academy Awards wasn't an awards snub, a teleprompter gaffe or a wardrobe malfunction. It was Lady Gaga.

On Sunday night, Gaga came out on stage, voice first, in a tribute to the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music and if the Oscars announcer hadn't said her name first, you might not have realized it was her. Gone was the pop star who growled her way through "Poker Face" in avant-garde outfits. Instead, Gaga came out belting notes we didn't know she was capable of.

The pop star crooned her way through our favorite Sound of Music classics, from "Edelweiss" and "The Hills Are Alive" to "Favorite Things" and "Climb Every Mountain." And she totally nailed it.

If Gaga's voice was sounding better than ever, Twitter's breath was a bit taken away. Responses were mixed at first...

...until Julie Andrews took the stage and formally gave Gaga's performance her stamp of approval. "Dear Lady Gaga," said Andrews, in what might be the most surprisingly endearing line of the night, "thank you for that wonderful tribute. It really warmed my heart, it really did."

They embraced, they cried and then so did all of us at home. And we finally agreed, once and for all, that Lady Gaga can seriously sing.

We all knew Gaga was talented but this is incredible. It's so out of this world amazing that I'm quite shocked.

I mean, she's not wearing PVC, she's not got a weird artist vomiting paint all over her and she isn't actively hibernating in an egg so we're not used to this side of Gaga.

It's all about the voice. And live singing. Take note literally everyone else.

And she said words like 'dear' and 'wondrous' which was just brilliant.

Can she host next year? Please?

Julie Andrews herself was awed by Gaga’s performance, applauding and thanking her.

Unfortunately, I don't like the way things are going on. They "all" praise her because she's done something conventional and toned it down to the point where there's no Gaga in what I saw in that performance.

They will bash her again as soon as she becomes "Gaga" again, bookmark me

Yes and no.

The thing about her "old stuff" is that she never showcased her classic training much, and people simply had no idea she was even CAPABLE of that. What she did today is let people know she has talent, and that may translate to interest when her new album comes out. While I agree a lot of people will probably shun a strictly pop record, she has already hinted she wants to do something a little more funk/rock and roll next time, so who even knows what journey we're in for.

Basically, it's too early to tell.
