There are few performers these days who evoke such a specific sense of the transformative nature of both fashion and performance as Lady Gaga. The pop icon has become arguably equally famous for her music and her increasingly eye-catching ensembles, attending last year’s Oscar ceremony in an Atelier Versace stunner. This year, the singer, along with her stylist, Brandon Maxwell, went a more classic route, seeking to recapture the splendor of old Hollywood with a bountiful array of ensembles from Azzedine Alaïa, who has never before designed pieces specifically for the award ceremony.

“Gaga and I talked a lot about this moment, how much it means to her, and how much it means to me both as a fashion lover and fan of the Oscars,†says Maxwell. “She and I have spent a lot of time with Mr. Alaïa in his home,†added the stylist, “and we really wanted to choose someone we have a powerful friendship with to share this moment with us.†As for Gaga, who has worn Alaïa on numerous occasions and last year visited the exhibition celebrating his work in Paris: “I’ve always approached my work with designers more as their muse than as a true collaborator,†says the singer. “When you’re a proper muse, it allows the designer and stylist to paint a full vision on their canvas and achieve a fashion moment.â€

The end resultâ€â€for the red carpet, at leastâ€â€is a shimmering frock filled with crocodile scale–like texture, exaggerated shoulders, and, naturally, a perfect fit. “No one does a silhouette better than Mr. Alaïa,†proclaims Maxwell. “Hands down, he is the master.†And it’s not surprising that the designer’s self-proclaimed muse of the moment agrees. “Mr. Alaïa loves the look,†says Gaga. “If the artist loves his artwork, then I’m successful as the vehicle of his voice. For me, it’s all about supporting the artist and making his Oscars dream come true.†For Maxwell, seeing the dress’s creation (a process that required a team of 25 people, working for two weeks) was almost better than receiving the finished product: “Watching Alaïa work and create this pieceâ€â€from the embroidery, to the shoes, to the glovesâ€â€it’s what you dream about working in fashion your whole life.â€

This is not a pair that underestimates the power of the red carpet. “Brandon is the first stylist I’ve worked with that truly viewed me as a beautiful woman,†says Gaga. “He’s able to push himself and do extreme things at times, but also has moments when he wants the world to see me for me,†notes the performer. “My whole life has become a red carpet.â€â€‹
