PARISâ€â€As many as 300 graves were desecrated at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France, officials said Sunday, the latest escalation in a wave of anti-Semitic violence in Europe.

French officials are searching for an unknown number of assailants who upended or broke tombstones and headstones in roughly three quarters of the 400 graves at a historic Jewish cemetery in Sarre-Union, a small town near France’s border with Germany, a person familiar with the inquiry said.

“Everything will be done to make sure those responsible for the odious and barbaric act will be identified and punished,†said French President François Hollande. “France is determined to fight relentlessly against anti-Semitism and those who would attack our values.â€

The attack is the latest in a series across Europe that has targeted Europe’s Jews, raising concerns over whether authorities are doing enough to stem a rise in anti-Semitism.

On Saturday, a gunman shot at a synagogue in Copenhagen, killing one guard, after having attacked an event where participants were discussion freedom of speech and Islam.

Anxiety is particularly high in France, home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the world. Last month, an armed gunman took hostages in a kosher supermarket outside Paris, killing four, as part of a broader terror spree that claimed 17 lives.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Sunday evening that forensic police were combing the cemetery for evidence to aid in the hunt for those responsible, adding that the regional prefect and local prosecutor were on the scene as well to help the investigation.

“The Republic will not tolerate this new wound to the values that all French people share,†Mr. Cazeneuve said.

Jewish cemeteries have been subject to desecration with some regularity in France. The cemetery in Sarre-Union itself has been targeted at least twice before, since 1988, according to press reports at the time.

Anti-Semitic attacks generally have been on the rise in France, too. In 2013, the latest year for which data have been compiled, there were 423 reported anti-Semitic incidents in France, compared with 82 in 1999, according to the Jewish Community Security Service, a body that compiles data based on police reports.

It's pathetic that in the 21st Century there's still so much discrimination against people based on their religion. To destroy someone's grave shows the utmost disrespect
