1 suspect dead, 3 in custody, in alleged plot to open fire at public venue, police say

Nova Scotia police say a tip helped them stop a plot to kill a large number of people in Halifax on Saturday.

Police said they took three suspects involved in the alleged plot into custody. Another was found dead in a home in Timberlea, N.S.

"I can tell you that it was a tip, a source from the public that initiated the initial investigation," said Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer Brian Brennan. "We want people to know we became aware, we acted quickly and intercepted a threat."

He revealed no more information about the source of the information.

He said a man and woman planned to go to a public venue in the Halifax region on Feb. 14 "with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves."

Brennan said a tip was received Thursday morning that a 19-year-old man from Timberlea and a 23-year-old woman from Geneva, Ill., had access to firearms and presented a significant weapons-related threat.

Police tracked the 19-year-old down to Tiger Maple Drive in Timberlea, entered the house and found him dead early Friday. The roles of the other male suspects, aged 20 and 17, of Halifax and Cole Harbour respectively, is still to be determined as part of the investigation, police said Friday night.

The Timberlea house is owned by Patricia Cody and John Gamble, according to a provincial government website.

At 2 a.m. Friday, police arrested the 20-year-old man and the female suspect at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The woman was arriving in Canada, and the man was meeting her.

At 11 a.m. Friday, police arrested the 17-year-old in Cole Harbour.

"We believe we have apprehended all known individuals in this matter and eliminated the threat. We are not seeking any further suspects at this time in relation to this investigation," Brennan said.

"I wouldn't characterize it as a terrorist event. I would classify it as a group of individuals that had some beliefs and were willing to carry out violent acts against citizens."

He didn't say what the beliefs were, other than that "they were not culturally based."

The operation involved the Halifax police, RCMP, the Geneva Police Department in Illinois and other policing partners.

The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of the man in Timberlea.

QUESTION: Would you consider this a terrorism threat? Is it home-grown terrorism?

BRENNAN: I wouldn't characterize it as a terrorist event. I would classify it as a group of individuals that had some beliefs and were willing to carry out violent acts against citizens but there's nothing in the investigation to classify it as a terrorist attack or terroist incident.

QUESTION: What do you mean by "some beliefs"?

BRENNAN: Again, that is part of the investigation and we're not in a position right now to discuss that.

On the suspects

QUESTION: Can you say if they were of a jihadist nature? Evangelical, right-winged nature?

BRENNAN: I can tell you that it's not culturally based.

QUESTION: But you aren't ruling out whether this is terrorism?

BRENNAN: We're not ruling anything out until the investigation is concluded. But our investigation is not leading us down that particular avenue at this time.

Sounds like the talk of mass murder-suicide turned to a plain old suicide. Which suggests he's more of of psychological mess than an ideologue.

Good police work anyway.

Real terrorism is done for a political or religious cause and is typically part of a larger pattern or organized group.

Not some mentally ill guy who shoots up a school, or angry dude who "goes postal" and shots up his workplace. Mass murders get a LOT of attention, we just don't call them terrorism.

Just say it out loud, it's not terrorism when it's done by white non muslim people. Youth obsessed with Columbine and NeoNazis "had some beliefs" and planned mass murder, one even travelled from USA to do it, and it's still not terrorism to you.

What Breivik did is also not terrorism because you invented your own definition.

"This appeared to be a group of murderous misfits. (...) The attack does not appear to have been culturally motivated, therefore not linked to terrorism", said Canadian Justice Minister Peter MacKay.

However, we can reveal that this statement is in fact false. We can present hard proof that Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath is in fact a committed Neo-Nazi, and has been an active member of the Neo-Nazi scene for several years. Therefore, it can be safely concluded that the planned mass murder in Canada had in fact a political right-wing terrorist background, which might be an inconvenient revelation.

Breivak was politically motivated. He wanted to seen that way. The prosecutors thought his example would be less dangerous if they could dismiss him as a crazy man, rather than a dangerous ideologue.

There are plenty of cases of black on white violence where the perp has said racist things or had some racist motive, but they don't usually emphasize that in order to minimize racial tension. The black guy who killed the 2 NY city policeman in December wasn't called a terrorist either.

It's Al Quada and the fact 9/11 killed 3000 that makes us take Muslim terrorism so seriously.

In contrast, the IRA was known as terrorists but people didn't freak out about Irish terrorism in UK because they tried to limit civilian casualties. No 7/11 type attack on mass transport.

Breivik was both politically and religiously motivated, read his manifesto, so what was he? Tell us.

As for these "misfits", believing in "white power" is an ideology and it doesn't matter if there is huge organization behind it. Forums like stormfront are full of these people.

If these 3 had arabic looks or muslim names there would be no doubt that this case would scream "terrorism". No one would call them just "crazy individuals". Stop with the double standards.

If Nazis do something large scale like 9/11, people will be a lot more paranoid about them. Oklahoma City in 1995 was kind of a one off. There are plenty of black nationalist white hating groups too. US allows them freedom of speech, yet doesn't have any more hate crime incidents than Europe with their tough hate speech laws. Maybe the reverse!

Blame Al Quada for the paranoia about Muslim terrorism.
