uo111 5,283
I can't stop and I won't stop. I know many of us have been disrespected and discriminated against but that drawing and the ones that followed were catalysts. The Civil Rights movement was catalysted because Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus. WWI was initiated as a result of King Ferdinand's assassination. That misrepresentation of Muhammad was a catalyst for the attacks and attacks since. Obviously, many Muslims were able to shake off that picture although it was highly disrespectful. However, there are extremists who were outraged by it and its continued publication. Lives were lost all because of that portrayal of Muhammad. It sounds ridiculous but people should know when the line has been crossed. People think just because they have freedom of speech they can abuse it however they wish which they technically can but it's morally wrong. The West is gifted with free speech but many of us abuse it on many occasions and fail to see the consequences. Don't just assume all Muslims just wanted to take part in the attacks because that is false. Like I said, the majority of Muslims were able to bear the ridicule of their prophet and protest it methodically but there exists a minute percentage of Muslims which are extremists who do not truly follow Muhammad's word and go to drastic and unnecessary measures The civil rights movement didn't involve murdering people who disagreed. WWI is not considered a good thing, because, well you know, lots of people died. Murder is not a consequence of free speech. It's offensive that you would compare this to the Civil Rights Movement. It's ridiculous that you would justify it by bringing up a world war.

WWI is not a good thing obviously as was this attack and the Charlie Hebdo attack. I was insinuatig that small things create catalyst the biggest of events. You don't know how many die for free speech and respect within society. Don't assume that no one has died because of free speech also. If we had just made it illegal for blacks to fight for their rights then no one would've died. Killing a countries leader is not a "small thing." A small thing is drawing a picture, and there is no excuse for that to cause someone to murder someone, let alone for that to cause many people to murder on a regular basis. Murder is a consequence of stupid people having a lack of self control or living in a deluded reality. It's not "because of free speech." Talk about shifting blame. Talk about shifting blame.Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated because there was so much strong opposition to the Civil Rights movement. Malcolm X was also assassinated. What I meant by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand being a small thing was that such an event that happened so quickly escalated into an almost decade long war Abusing free speech results in major consequences at times. Do not assume that it does not. Ignoring such a notion is what leads to attacks like these
DeleteMyAccount 11,881
Well, that's because in other religions, such figureheads as Muhammad have been depicted in full form throughout history. What makes Islam unique is that it never really has depicted Muhammad except in shroudy and hard to identify detail. Muslims don't even show his face because, for one, they don't know what he looks like, and secondly, Muhammad stated he did not want his image to be created because he would far he would be idolized. He didn't want that as he felt the main focus of Islam were his prophetic messages and those of others and a strong faith with God, not Muhammad as he is not divine. That's why it is so offensive to draw Muhammad for Muslims. Christians have depicted Jesus throughout history and Christians idolize Jesus and God which causes confusion as to why it is wrong to depict Muhammad I've studied that it is improper to visualize Muhammad but my point is why bring violence into the picture? I think it's important that the Muslim community withdraw themselves from the idiots who act for Islam.

garnite 8
I know what you mean. The extremists tarnish the images of regular and law abiding Muslims. The violence was unnecessary but it seemed almost inevitablehope you realise that when you say violence is an inevitable consequence of drawing cartoons that you are demonstrating the failure of islam to be a positive force within society. you're pointing out why it's a bad thing yet bewilderingly being an apologist for its extremist minority. and i also hope you realise that many muslims out there would say that you talking about the inevitability of violence for drawing cartoons is an insult to their religion, that one thing has nothing to do with the other, and when you talk about islam in this way you are giving credit to those who use violence to distort their religion away from the peaceful truth. which i don't agree with, because i think it's inherently not peaceful, but you're the one bizarrely concerned about muslim sensitivity more than anyone else's. i happen to agree with you that violence is inevitable when you have a holy book that strictly forbids drawing pictures. but that's a problem with the book and its supporters, not anyone who doesn't regard it as holy OR those believers in it who reject violence 100% without uselessly trying to get into the mindset of theocrats who'd kill you no later than they'd kill me.
