Microsoft announces HoloLens, introduces holographic computing

Microsoft HoloLens headwear will enable wearers to manipulate models and other content, place instructional cues on real life objects, place a screen on the wall (view Netflix without turning on the television), access an interface into a virtual world and more. While they're not technically holograms (this isn't Tron... yet), it's an interesting step for Microsoft.

Some applications where this can prove to be useful include construction and architecture design, medicine and surgery, video gaming (of course!) and more. Every Windows 10 device will have APIs built in, both large and small devices. Better yet, holographic apps are universal, meaning all universal apps on Windows 10 can be made holographic.

Can see it in action here:

What I gathered was the screen with the holograms is what the lady is seeing through the HoloLens headwear.

Scroll to last two videos on following link to see what it can do:

So basically an extension of Google Glass in a way, but far more interesting and innovative. Just think where this may lead, REAL LIFE HOLOGRAMS sooner than we think!

This comes with their announcement of Windows 10, which sounds and looks very promising! And cool that all Windows 10 devices will come with APIs to allow for holographic computing

And those with Windows 8.1 get to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, I've heard?

Saw it on news - looks dumb and useless, like Google Glass. I'm more interested in the free Photoshop and if classic-style Start Menu will return.

Basically a way to make Windows 10 look new and innovative when actually it's just windows 7/8 that looks slightly different

Yes, it is true! You can upgrade for free for the first year after its initial release. Also, Windows 7 and Windows Phone 8 users can also update for free, for the first year.

Probably another useless gimmick

Well, you guys obviously didn't read much in the quote, as it has many practical and useful applications for things such as architecture, design, gaming and much more, so it's not just a gimmick

But as for the classic-style start screen, yes that is making a return. It will be a hybrid of the classic and metro style though. Here's a pic of what it will look like:

As for the free Photoshop, not sure about that.

Gaming? Sounds like just more Wii, Kinect and Oculus Rift-type novelty shenanigans. Give me mouse, keyboard and 1080p monitor.

But as for the classic-style start screen, yes that is making a return. It will be a hybrid of the classic and metro style though. Here's a pic of what it will look like:

The Metro is such crap. It's downright nasty. Why chock my screen full of ads I don't want? Windows 8.1 is a pain to use compared to Windows 7. Frankly I just want classic grey colour scheme, with square edges like so. Built for serious work, no Aero distraction crapola. This is how I run my 7.

Oop. Free Word, Excel, Powerpoint. :emma:

Well, we all have our tastes. Personally, I think the new start screen in Windows 10 looks great, very clean and modern-looking. I love the Aero aesthetic. That style you have reminds me of Windows 95 and the 90s, which I'm not here for   Though I certainly could do without the metro tiles as I don't even use the Windows Store and never will. I don't need apps AND programs on my PC, I'll just stick with classic programs.

And not sure about the free Office. I really doubt they will give it for free, they make a lot of money off Office and won't be making any from users buying Windows 10 since they're giving it away for free.

I don't have to worry as I get a free installation of the full Office suite through my university.
