Quidditch, potion-making and a stunning castle: Harry Potter fans study wizardry at real-life 'Hogwarts' in western Poland

Three years after the final film, Harry Potter super-fans have the chance to attend their very own Hogwart

Organisers say they were shocked by the global interest for something that is just 'a small, fan-made event'

The one regret of fans of JK Rowling's beloved Harry Potter universe is that its Muggle readers cannot attend Hogwarts, but now there is a solution – if you can wait until you are 18.

Held at Czocha castle in Poland, The College of Wizardry is a live-action role play (LARP) organised by volunteers in which players take the roles of students, with veteran Nordic LARP-ers playing the staff.

The first four-day event in November sold out in two days and saw 190 people from 11 countries join together to create the English-language College, where students could pursue one of five areas of study: fighting the dark arts as aurors or curse-breakers; training as a healer; working with magical animals as a magizoologist; or studying the unspeakables, which bear no further comment.

The Czocha College of Witchcraft and Wizardry website says: "We cannot recreate the special effects of the movies, but we can recreate quite a lot of the visual feel – and not least the drama."

For 280 euros (£220), students are provided with lodging and meals, as well as robes, a house tie, and their college books while they are studying, and are encouraged to pursue emotional relationships, whether they be friendships, or bitter rivalries like that of Harry and Draco Malfoy.

Rowling only explored a couple of foreign wizarding schools in her books (France's Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, and the secretive Durmstrang Insitute) but the forthcoming Potter film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is expected to show us the wizarding world of New York, so there is no reason why Poland shouldn't also have a thriving magical community.

Students at the College will be sorted into one of five houses: Durentius, Faust, Libussa, Molin, or Sendivogius.

As at Hogwarts, the houses are named after people with strong associations to magic: Durentius stems from Faust's Polish equivalent Pan Twardowski, also known as Laurentius Dhur.

Sendivogius is inspired by MichaÅ‚ SÄ™dziwój, a Polish alchemist. Libussa is named after LibuÃ…¡e, a soothsayer, and ancestor of the Czech people, while Molin may refer to Raffaele Molin, the Italian zoologist.

The Polish LARP organisation Liveform had long been interested in running a Potter game at Czocha Castle, but lacked the financial resources. They joined forces with Denmark's Rollespilsfabrikken but neither party had foreseen how popular the event would be.

"We got swamped by sign-ups and in two days the event was sold out. None of us had seen that coming," says Claus Raasted of Rollespilsfabrikken. "And here we are now with quite a bit of global interest for something that is in essence just a small, fan-made event."

Three years after the release of the final Harry Potter film, the appetite for all things Potter shows no signs of diminishing. The College comes just weeks after the publication of new stories by JK Rowling's on her website Pottermore, the opening of an unofficial Harry Potter-themed hotel in London, and a new Dark Arts area at the Harry Potter WB Studio Tour.

Wizards aged 18 or over, take note: registration for the next edition of The College of Wizardry, on April 16–19 2015, opens on December 11 at 8pm CET, while a sequel to November's event runs between April 9–12.

Or a scam.

Since money involved in this.

But go for the experience, I suppose.

I am happy enough with Harry Potter theme park at Universal Studio.

How can it be a scam? Do you think people actually expect their brooms to fly or their wands to do spells?

No, I was being silly.

But this could be advertised better as lodging.
