Around a million people are marching in a unity rally in Paris after 17 people were killed in terror attacks last week at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket.

Joining them are around 50 world leaders, but how much do some of those attending really care about the freedom of the press within their own countries?

Nine of those countries being represented today are in the final third of the World Press Freedom Index, compiled annually by Reporters Without Borders.

Here they are with their ranking, out of 180, on the index in parentheses:

Algeria (121)

Represented by foreign Ramtane Lamamra

Mali (122)

Represented by president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita

Ukraine (127)

Represented by president Petro Porochenko

Tunisia (133)

Represented by prime minister Mehdi Jomaa

Palestinian Authority (138)

Represented by president Mahmoud Abbas

Jordan (141)

Represented by King Abdullah II and Queen Rania

Russia (148)

Represented by foreign minister Sergei Lavrov

Turkey (154)

Represented by prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu

Bahrain (163)

Represented by foreign minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed Al Khalifa and Prince Abdullah Bin Hamad al-Khalifa

Almost everyone can aim to improve

It's only really the usual nations that have "good situations", plus I think many of the leader's attendance was also acting as condemnation of the attacks

You forget that 40 of those 50 leaders are from countries where press freedom is a fact....

Central and Northern Europe slaying.

But yes I agree, they most likely don't all at all and just want to get good headlines.

Palestinian Authority (138)

:teehee:

kidding aside, if it was up to me - Jerusalem was divided into 2 tomorrow's morning. I have no problem giving up on lands for true peace (just like most of the Israelis and Israel's attitude towards peace aggrements) and I think the Palestinians do deserve to control themselves. The problem is they couldn't. Just watch what Gaza became to be after Israel left.

are we going to have an off-topic discussion here?

Great to see you actually think the same way I do about this, Palestine deserves independence but they can't atm :spin: although it might be one of the underlying problems causing jihadism (the feeling that the west is trying to take over the Middle East some have).
