ChasingGhosts 726
All references to the fact that the hit UK movie Pride is about a group of gay activists has been deleted from the packaging of its American DVD release. Set in 1980s England and Wales and inspired by real events, the film shows how the early gay pride movement united to show solidarity during the Miners’ Strike of 1984. On the UK DVD cover, the film’s main characters are described as a ‘London-based group of gay and lesbian activists. But in the US version, they are simply ‘London-based activists.’ The photo used on the cover has also been doctored to remove the banner that says “LESBIANS & GAYS SUPPORT THE MINERSâ€. So why has this awesome movie been ‘straight-washed’ for American DVD buyers? The DVD is released by Sony Pictures and CBS films. Via twitter, a CBS staffer said “we’re looking into this now.†Pride’s out gay director Ben Roberts told the UK’s Independent newspaper that he’s not surprised the US distributors have “watered down the gay content.†“I’m not defending it – it’s wrong and outmoded – but I’m not surprised,†he clarified. “It’s an unfortunate commercial reality both here and in the US that distributors have to deal with. LGBT material is largely marginalised outside of rare hits like Brokeback Mountain.†http://youtu.be/6w8sJPq8_d4 Source http://www.samesame.com.au/news/11748/Pride-is-straight-washed-for-US-DVD-release Born This Way > Joanne > The Fame Monster > The Fame > ARTPOP

Goosey 3,017
Americans would be less likely to purchase or rent a movie that says "gay" on the front of it. bigpinkenergy 1,050
Just import it from the UK if you live in the US. I think the issue is more that somewhere there's people taking the words 'gay' and 'lesbian' out of the spotlight so that it's less of an emphasis, which is sad. HighwayGuy 1,498
If they've only changed the packaging and not the actual content then that is just false advertising if it's all about gay people. Pretty sure it'll be less popular now, it sounds just like some miners get some support from some random activists and that's about it
jojo Freud 653
OMG HOW HAVNT I SEEN THIS? It looks hilarious Regarding the cover change, I'm not really surprised. The same thing happened with an Australian movie called the sapphires. The australian cover focused on the aboriginal main actors whilst the american cover focused on the main white actor The american cover is on the left whilst the Australian one is on the right

bornthisway51 435
In a way it's a good thing. It could reach audiences that would never have thought to pick it up if they'd seen the word "gay"...
Elizabeth 750
That's so stupid, it shouldn't be allowed. It should be the same in all countries.. Highly recommend the film if you haven't watched it though!
