craig 680
But what does abandoning Hip-Hop after so many years for a perverted caricature of EDM say about his credibility? So after Stronger and ET, Kanye isn't real rap either? What a sell out. I hear real rap stations wouldn't even play his last album.
elijahfan 26,303
It really irks me when some people bash others for not being educated enough to comment on those issues. Like... everyone is concerned by those issues, so anyone can have an opinion. Stop belittling people.

Navy 495
But what does abandoning Hip-Hop after so many years for a perverted caricature of EDM say about his credibility? If Charles Manson told you that murder was ok, would you go out and kill somebody and justify your actions by saying "Well he told me it's ok."? Stupid comparison. Supersonic 49,376
I can't "this" this post enough. That's irrelevant. The point is you said he's not hip-hop. But he is. BUT HE ISN'T. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME HE ACTUALLY DID HIP-HOP. 2007? Hip-Hop is a genre of music, not a birthmark or mole. His music is not even Electro-Hop. It is pop. It is not even good pop, it is the one I won't even sing when I'm drunk. HE IS NOT HIP-HOP
Ray of Light 8,134
This is all petty and isn't going to solve any racial problems, if anything, it's making things worse.
DrewStevens 5,249
It's funny how some of you are saying that will.i.am is not allowed to have an opinion because he "sold himself". He tried to do something different. He started the EDM era of pop music along with Gaga. So Gaga is revolutionary for incorporating electronic music to pop music but will.i.am is a trash for incorporating electronic music to hip hop. Is that how it works? If you are black you need to stay on your lane while white artists can come and go with every genre? That's bull****. You can disagree with him but why do you have to discredit his opinion by saying he is not a hip hop artist? Isn't this a racial issue anyway? Hewkah 48
I can't "this" this post enough. That's irrelevant. The point is you said he's not hip-hop. But he is. He was Hip-Hop a LONG time ago lol. So if he suddenly decides to do Jazz (LOL) he's still Hip-Hop? Are you for real? Hip-Hop is simply a genre, it's not a label-for-life. Echo 327
This is going to end well... I purposely didn't make a thread for the support AB received as it's a problem BIGGER than what most people here can begin to comprehend and goes far beyond AB v IA but if we're really going to drag this on and on then let's get some more threads going. You said a mouth full right here.
superman 32
lets put it this way: William has done more hip hop than azealia banks so that makes him a bit more experienced on the issue than the bully girl
Desperado 2,439
What is the point then? I mean that in the most honest way possible, if you have the time please explain it to me so I can understand it better because I'm not getting what she is trying to say. I've already talked about I don't think Iggy is acting from a point of white privilege. I totally get Azealia being p*ssed at Iggy ripping off part of the culture she belongs to and watering it down into pop music, but still trying to pass it off as hip hop- effectively 'smearing' hip hop and rap culture's name. I know that is wrong, and it is even more annoying that people buy into it more than the real deal. But I don't see this as a racial issue, more of an identity issue (i.e Nicki minaj at the start of her career did a similar thing and made music that was arguably much more pop than it was hip hop but got nowhere near as much criticism). Ultimately, I'm not a fan of Iggy. I don't think she is talented, and I think the music she makes should be classed as pop. Other people think she is a new frontier of a changing rap culture, and that is fine too. That is the thing with art, everything is subjective and as a result cultures will change- for better or worse. In my opinion, if Azealia wants to keep the identity of the culture she is so intertwined with, she should do it through her music rather than attacking Iggy. Oh well i think you quite get the point but its not about Azealia vs Iggy its more of a cultural thing, a bigger picture. I thought you didnt get it because you were talking about success in the other post. But its almost that, and its not only Azealia the one who is being talking about it, J Cole too, Kendrick and others. The thing is that the media and this awards are giving white rappers or white singers props for something that blacks do better but they dont get the recognition they deserve. They think white people get it easy because of their privileges. lets put it this way: William has done more hip hop than azealia banks so that makes him a bit more experienced on the issue than the bully girl not after he sold out in the 2000's
FrozenKookie 2,638
@IGGYAZALEA is saddens me that people are making a big deal about race in hiphop & not ethics...today's ethics goes against our foundation Don't tell me he doesn't have a good point lol
SychosSoChic 9,995
He was Hip-Hop a LONG time ago lol. So if he suddenly decides to do Jazz (LOL) he's still Hip-Hop? Are you for real? Hip-Hop is simply a genre, it's not a label-for-life. HE IS NOT HIP-HOP It's where he started. He knows it. He understands it. IT IS WHERE HIS CAREER STARTED. Just because I stop swimming for a few years does not mean I don't know how to swim. This isn't simply about"genre", or whether or not you like his music, this is about the culture behind it. You do not forget a culture you were a part of, it stays with you. So again, our opinions on his music and his artistic choices mean NOTHING, because he was a hip-hop artist starting out, and there is a culture behind that, that he understands and as such his opinion does carry weight. Whether you like his latest song or not means nothing. Life ain't Hollywood for any one of us.
Supersonic 49,376
Imo, will.i.am, did nothing to redeem himself as a hip-hop artist. for a very long time. i despise his current music, and I really think that EDM's horrible reputation stems from his productions. I'm not saying that black artists, aren't allowed to do pop, EDM or any other genre, Kanye's pop records are some of the greatest of all time, The Weeknd is one of the most talented artists I can think of, Chasing Time by Azealia is a great song. My passion just stems from a place of deep disappointment that somebody as influencial as as he was in Hip-Hop would just completely sell himself out. I know that all artists have to, but to that degree will.i.am did is just pure perversion and disgusting to me. I don't find his opinion credible at all, because in my eyes he's been doing the same thing Iggy tried to do: Break into a somewhat foreign culture's mainstream with a really cheap caricature of music.
