I listened to the whole thing, and Azealia makes some great points. I do not agree with her on some issues, but she has been spilling mad tea.
On one hand, I understand where's she's coming from, Bill Cosby being publicly torn down while the human rights of black people are extremely violated in the US is pretty suspicious, there are other white Hollywood creeps out there nobody bothers to call out. But on the other hand: damn Bill Cosby raped more than 20 women, he did deserve to be torn down. The 'when' is just unfortunate.
I do think white people are able to create Rap music, the cultural appropiation that white people did while adopting this genre are humongous and unforgivable, but some take their profession really seriously + they refrain from appropiating black culture (Brooke Candy comes to my mind). Unfortunately that is the minority.

A white girl who grew up idolizing blacks, who moved half way around the world to be closer to their music scene, who probably has heard the N word uttered on rap CDs tens of thousands of times, who dates a black man ...

Basically her and Miley think everything black is cool, but the cool blacks kids don't want them at their table. (Weird how America is racist yet blackness is so cool. Americans are funny.)

Which is either racism toward white people or cultural appropriation by white people. I can see where both sides are coming from but I myself don't know where to stand besides the middle.

Is it wrong that as a songwriter myself (who happens to be white) I incorporate/express myself through rapping sometimes and I've grown up listening to Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Drake, Eminem, Azealia Banks, etc? I don't consider what I write to be cultural appropriation since I'm just expressing who I am, but maybe that is a different discussion for a different day once I actually put music out. :flop:

Oh my God you're like talking to a brick wall so I'm just going to quote some various other things I said to answer some things -

Azealia Banks doesn't make Pop, but still - Pop music is incredibly white washed anyway. They want their black women whiter to the point they barely look like they're dual heritage, let alone like their actual heritage.

Iggy doesn't rap, she basically impersonates what she thinks is rap (a.k.a. that awful stereotype of a black gangster bragging) and tries to run with it over a pop instrumental and some random pop girl pulled from the bunch. She's not making rap music.

Oh please, that last part is just laughable.

You're defending someone who believes she can say "n*gger" as a way to demean someone and call herself the "Slave Master" and whip? If breaking down stereotypes is what you're claiming she's doing... you're wrong, my friend

Okay I'm done, you're not even taking in what she's saying or you haven't even bothered to watch the whole interview. She talks about the media which happily ran with the headlines - "HIP-HOP IS WHITE"

.......

Just think to yourself for a moment how wrong that is. Most of yours, Craig's and various other's views on this are "Oh rap is for everyone, not just black people boo" ... The media is white washing music and now they're doing the same to rap, one of the last genres where someone who wasn't white could excel in without being white but now they're throwing out Nicki (who clearly has an issue with this too) and other talanted black rappers for a white girl who stereotypes them, believes she is there master and believes she has the right to use a slur they would have all heard used against them? It's just wrong.

I'm f*cking white and I can see how messed up this is. I would love for everything to be a level playing field no matter what you're skin colour is but it's not.

no its more then that, it's hard to explain, as being a part of a minority its more like a beacon where you feel at home and trying to preserve that. In the LGBTQ scene you have this too right? I guess its certain dances like vogueing or certain things that make the LGBTQ culture distinctive but at the same time its a trademark thing were some gays/lesbians/bi/etc can relate to. For the urban community its hip-hop, and now they feel like the media/white business people are trying to make it mainstream in such a way, it feels foreign to the urban community. It's been taken out of context. the whole thing behind hiphop, was to convey problems/topics the urban community had/still have to deal with.

Well I'm bis-xual but I guess I'm not really in tune with LGBTQ culture besides what I find/use here like slay, drag, tea, etc. so when I see straight people use things it doesn't bother me.

If I'm white and I use rap sometimes to express myself but I don't claim to be hip-hop/claim to have the same problems as that culture then it is okay right? :air:

You just literally encapsulated everything that is wrong about it. Everything. Like the fact you don't see a problem with it is astounding.

It shows that the "white society is all racist" a--lysis is simplistic and one-dimensional.

When black kids grow up idolizing everything white, they are thought to have internalized racism. But now whites kids are doing the same with black culture and sometimes Asian culture.

Either some whites are self-hating, or some people just prefer to choose another culture than they are born to. Why not let them be? It reminds me of the debate within feminism over trans women.

Which is another example of her wanting to imitate her rap heroes. You can disapprove, but she'd isn't saying it to be demeaning.

Well on the mainstream end of it, if someone wants to be more popular they can trend hop and make music designed for pop radio play instead of being a true artist.

The Grammy thing infuriates me, but it's not even just Iggy, it's the fact they reward commercial excellence moreso than artistic excellence across the board.

Yeah that's exactly it, it makes a genre that's closely connected to their culture look like a trend that iggys hopping on. Her "rap" is so commercialized and tailored for pop radio that it's not even rap anymore. Yet it gets called rap song of the year and she's called the next new big name in rap.

And oh yes definitely, Grammys r kinda trash now :/

And even if there's some tension in this thread I really enjoy this discussion because just reading through some posts, everyone can gain some perspective through others thoughts and talk about something that's really important.

same tho haha, I'm not really in tune as well...I just presumed (that like a majority of this site) you were were gay

i think it's more in Iggy's /Macklemore's case that their music seems to be favored more, while their work is not the best hiphop has to offer. But a lot of award shows seem to favor them, and it makes the urban community feel like hiphop lost in a way their purpose...its not about the genre, its about the deep rooted emotions from the community tied to the genre that make this so complex :emma:

But just do your thing with hiphop (god this is so complex :smh: )

Please just stop. Recognizing you have certain privileges is not self-hating and you honestly are just hurting my brain trying to run with this one.
