Schwerk 7,246
Never saw Gaga as a mainstream pop girl, never will. To me she was an experimental pop artist that happened to score a string of hits. Gaga is not alone. Lorde, Lana, FKW Twigs, Adele, SIA, Robyn... they all aren't your typical popartist, but I guess we finally live in a time where female popartists can be more than a pretty face with mediocre singing ability. Men had it easier it seems, their talent doesn't seem to be questioned as much. Gaga really stirred things up by controlling her own artistic vision and being able to sell it at the same time. I think its hard for the world to really understand her. They wanna label her, yet most male popstars never seem to be forced to fit a certain mold. Now there are more female artists in control of their own artistic vision and as long as they all keep making hits, Gaga will too be part of the pop scene. That scene is changing. It's not just about empty entertainment anymore, people want both beautiful music and visual entertainment and Gaga is master at this. According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch
StrawberryBlond 14,862
As long as she's still getting #1 and top ten singles globally and selling out arenas worldwide, then she's still mainstream. By this stage of their career, most popstars are selling like Gaga currently is, if not worse. Most popstars have a very limited shelf life and few are successful for more than 5 years. With today's music market the way it is, it's not uncommon for artists to debut and be a massive success, but when they release their sophomore album, no one wants to know. I could give you a list as long as my arm of the amount of artists this has happened to. So, Gaga is setting herself up well to still be around years from now. Not every popstar has strengths in every area, yet they still continue to be successful. Mariah sold a ton of albums, but she never had the worldwide demand for a tour (even in the US, she only did theatres 90% of the time). 75% of the singles released from a Rihanna album flop because she doesn't promote them, film videos for them and most people stop caring after her first 2 singles anyway. Beyonce hasn't had a US #1 since Single Ladies. Britney was a decade into her career before she got her second US #1 single (and has only had 4 to date). But all these artists shortcomings don't make them flops or non mainstream, far from it. Put it this way: Miley was supposedly the It Girl of 2013, yet her tour didn't do well outside the US and while not all the boxscores have come back yet, I predict she'll have made less than $75 million with her tour, which is less than what the artRave is rumoured to have grossed (despite less dates when you omit festival appearances). Ariana is hailed by many Americans as the It Girl of 2014, yet her album is really failing to smash, even in the US and her tour is unlikely to pull in mega millions. Gaga is doing better than a lot of artists are doing at their peak, so how is she flopping? It just looks like she's flopping compared to what she was once doing. It's hard to deal with no longer selling 12 million albums and selling out stadiums. But it's not like every artist can do that forever anyway. It's crazy what some people label as a flop these days. So many people cited Gaga's Latin American leg of the BTWB a flop, even though she played to over 300k people there and made over $23 million. People like Rihanna rarely go there and when they do it's just 2-3 dates. People like Pink, Taylor Swift and Kylie have never even toured there because they don't have an audience there at all. Yet, people had the cheek to call Gaga a flop. With that kind of mindset, was it any wonder that ARTPOP underperformed? We expect way too much of this amazing woman. Guest
Praying for the sanity of people that actually voted no. She may be the badass, rebellious girl of the pop scene, but she's still mainstream. That's not a bad thing. It's a good thing, unless your a pretentious bastard that only listens to unheard of indie music and scoffs at mainstream stuff.
asana15 16,648
YES, I DO. She is not just the main girl. She is the 1-percenter of the music industry today. Per SLATE (see below): "...What we have now, on the other hand, is an extreme case of haves and have-nots. Swift may be quite a bit bigger than Lil Wayne, Justin Timberlake, and Lady Gaga. But really, when it comes to chart performance, this small handful of artists (plus consistent chart-toppers like Jay-Z and Beyoncé) is hobnobbing together in a very exclusive luxury box behind home plate while every other act is squinting from the bleachers..." "...Like our nation’s economy, popular music in the 2010s has an unmistakable class of 1 percenters..." http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2014/11/taylor_swift_s_1989_sales_top_1_million_copies_here_s_what_that_says_about.html
