Turkish President: Muslims discovered the Americas

Istanbul (AFP) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that the Americas were discovered by Muslims in the 12th century, nearly three centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot there.

"Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th century. Muslims discovered America in 1178, not Christopher Columbus," the conservative president said in a televised speech during an Istanbul summit of Muslim leaders from Latin America.

"Muslim sailors arrived in America from 1178. Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast," Erdogan said.

Erdogan said that Ankara was even prepared to build a mosque at the site mentioned by the Genoese explorer.

"I would like to talk about it to my Cuban brothers. A mosque would go perfectly on the hill today," the Turkish leader said.

History books say that Columbus set foot on the American continent in 1492 as he was seeking a new maritime route to India.

A tiny minority of Muslim scholars have recently suggested a prior Muslim presence in the Americas, although no pre-Columbian ruin of an Islamic structure has ever been found.

In a controversial article published in 1996, historian Youssef Mroueh refers to a diary entry from Columbus that mentions a mosque in Cuba. But the passage is widely understood to be a metaphorical reference to the shape of the landscape.

Quote from Journal:

"Remarking on the position of the river and port, to which he gave the name of San Salvador, he describes its mountains as lofty and beautiful, like the Pena de las Enamoradas, and one of them has another little hill on its summit, like a graceful mosque. The other river and port, in which he now was, has two round mountains to the S.W., and a fine low cape running out to the W.S.W." Journal of First Voyage, Oct 29, 1492.

Delusion at its finest? :smh:

The delusion. Honey choose first which continent your country belongs to before talking about discovering other people's countries.

First things first, Columbus did not discover America! He thought America was India. Like so many others.

Amerigo Vespucci was the first person from europe who realized that is a place that europeans have never been to .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amerigo_Vespucci

In addition, Columbus was probably toooooo dumb. Just think about it he had description of India(he has never been to India at the time he went to America) He thought America was india, even tho they do not look alike by any aspect.. Even foods, trees are different.

WHAT HE SAYS CONCERNS HIM NOT THE WHOLE COMMUNITY.

Plus yeah he is a fool. He is such a disgrace for whole turkish heritage, and disgrace for a real innovative gentleman, founder of Republic of Turkey ...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustafa_Kemal_Atat%C3%BCrk

PS: this whole discussion tell me that history classes should be obligatory. Honestly !

This is so sad that this guys is turkish president. The problem with Turkey is now that ignorant minorities&conservatives are united. He has around 40% vote in the country actually but opposed parties are not united so there is space for him to take power.

He is crazy for power. According to his agenda Turkey gets stronger as a state just like Russia, but loses its human rights and liberal aspects.

Turkey is one of the country who transitioned to Republic earlier than most of the world. Women's suffrage in early 19s! Being gay is decriminalized in 1858 in Ottoman Empire, now known as Turkey.

Turkey is not a muslim state, it is a secular state who has mostly muslim population.

The biggest gay parade of Eastern Europe is held in Istanbul. Turkey is much more liberal than all eastern european countries like Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia etc.

Also There are 4 political parties in national assembly now, 2 of them supports gay marriage.

Just to understand liberal side of Turkey, you can search gezi protests. #occupygezi ... This was a great rally for human rights. There are so many crazy ****s because of conservatives in all eastern europe, nobody stands up, atleast in Turkey there are enough enlightened people who stand up and fight for their rights!

WHAT THIS GUY SAYS CONCERN HIM not a whole community....

Openly Gay, Openly Atheist, born and raised Istanbulite here.

And Turkey has both territory on europe and on asia. Culturally too western part is more liberal, eastern part is more conservative.
