And other ID laws and such upheld by the Supreme Court during an election cycle prevented still others that could have voted, from voting. Not to mention this is a midterm, and GOP are more likely to turn out to begin with in elections especially midterms whereas more of the liberal-leaning voters don't turn out nearly as much as during presidential elections. And don't get me started on the unlimited amount of money allowed in our political campaigns that is clearly and overtly influencing our elections. 2012 was just the beginning as the first major one with the ruling of Citizens United which is the preeminemt superPAC, and this election was even worse with all the political ads. No telling what will happen in 2016.. Hmm... yes, fewer people vote during midterms. But how do voter ID laws prevent people from voting? I never really understood this argument. You need an ID to drive, buy alcohol, get on welfare programs, etc. How do people not have an ID? EDIT: I live in Texas, and as you may know they passed a Voter ID Law. Yet I remember my parents being asked for an ID way before this was passed.... so... I'm not sure about it. How many people don't have some sort of ID? If it were to be done constitutionally and with an appropriate roll out schedule and stream-lined and applied rationally, I don't think anyone would have that big of a problem with it. And you're thinking about the term "ID" in a colloquial sense rather than how it actually is applied here. Almost everyone has some form of identification, but not necessarily a form of ID that will be legally accepted. Several (I mean several) states have tried to make it so that student IDs were not an accepted form of identification, while simultaneously arguing that NRA memberships cards ARE an accepted form of identification. Or they would try to make it so that your driver's license couldn't be expired if you wanted to use it as identification (which is often the case for senior citizens). Let's take my state for example though. In my state, it's estimated that there are 300,000 eligible voters who don't have an accepted form of identification. Whether it be college students who have always relied on their student ID, senior citizens who haven't updated their ID in years, seniors citizens who were born at home (and thus don't have a birth certificate in order to get an ID), old birth certificates where the parents' msmrs aren't fully written (and are incapable of being used to receive an ID), etc. Furthermore, unlike everything else you listed, voting is a constitutional right. There shouldn't be significant barriers. And that's not even mentioning the cost of getting an ID, which is essentially a poll tax. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not surprised at all and I definitely won't be surprised if the next president is a Republican as well, considering the national approval polls for Obama. A part of me feels that a big reason why he's been so unsuccessful is because they were so divided. It's hard to get anything done when the people working together are people who almost always disagree. However, after watching an episode of John Oliver's show, I've learned how much MORE important local legislation is. :dead: Makes me feel like I'd be better off paying more attention to local and state government elections than the big ones like this if I actually want to make a difference with my votes. The ball is in their court. If the GOP can come up with someone who is at least somewhat acceptable, they have this next one in the bag. Where you getting this information from? It's not slim to none, it's actually a very good chance she will be our next president if she runs. The Pubs have no star. Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul are too conservative, that will alienate the swing voters. Chris Christie is too liberal, that will alienate the conservative base like it did with Romney. The only ones who I think could even come close to beating her are Huckabee (But he won't run) Pataki or Bush the third (Fmr. Florida Gov.) And Paula Abdul ain’t got [BLEEP] on me!
