Better Day 5,766 Posted November 3, 2014 Share Posted November 3, 2014 Many of you will properly never be in Glasgow. Glaswegians hit out over plans to scrap Concert Hall Steps. They've been an iconic part of the city's Style Mile for years. But new plans to redesign Buchanan Galleries have put the future of the steps leading up to Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall under threat. The stone stairway has stood at the top of Buchanan Street behind a statue of Donald Dewar since the venue first opened its doors in 1990. They have long been a favourite resting spot for weary shoppers and workers on their lunch break, and often double as a makeshift amphitheatre for buskers and the occasional pipe band. During the referendum, the iconic city centre landmark also became a key battleground for politicians and campaigners on both sides of the debate. Later, they were used to stage for a peace rally held by young people after rioting broke out in George Square after the vote on independence. On Thursday, November 30, STV News reported that a proposal to demolish the steps and replace them with a glass atrium has been met with public outcry. So far over 5000 people have signed the online Save the Steps petition.
