West Australian: "Taylor Swift's 1989, the closest thing to Thriller in years"

From what ive heard of 1989 the odes to cassette tapes and 1980's are a welcome bit of thematic consistency... however, thats where it begins and ends.

The music itself is more 90's than 80's. The lyrics are... I think childish is the wrong word, but childish. I'm only a year older than her and find these lyrics and some "clap and cheerleader" melodies cringeworthy.

Then we come to the voice. Even terrible albums (lotus, heartbreak on hold, glassheart) can be somewhat saved from complete trainwreck disaster by a strong vocal with intelligently timed inflection, emotional duality to lyrics or sheer vocal mastery. 1989 is not an album that has a voice. Taylor Swift does not have a voice.

Thank you  :applause:

Fortunately this girl is not a thing in my country  :reductive:

Musically, ARTPOP is 1000 times better than both Thriller and 1989.

This is as big a mess as the West Australian review.  :fan:  Just sit down and be quiet. ARTPOP is good, but its no fukcing Thriller, kid.

Everyone has the best selling album of their career.

Born This Way was Gaga's Thriller. Did it sell as much? No. But it had a huge cultural impact for it's time.

Yes, everyone has the best selling album of their career, obviously. Not everyone has the best selling album OF ALL TIME - which is what Thriller is. Thriller obliterated barriers in pop music, and was one of the reasons that black artists began to have their videos shown on MTV. Born This Way pales in comparison to the cultural impact of Thriller, and as for 1989? I don't see the comparison. It's not being blindly biased towards Michael Jackson because he is Michael Jackson, it's just plain fact - Thriller is the best selling album of all time.

As much as I love the album and Taylor I can't help but cringe at this article!

I mean they are obviously kissing her ass cuz she's killing it with her album sales rightnow! Geez some media outlets can be very annoying sometimes like this one and article from forbes. They love to over-hype someone's success then they have no problem burning him down to the floor later when his work under-perform let alone flop!

Is Taylor Swift famous?

nope she's not! She just uses magic to sell over 1 million copies of her albums first week thats all..

it is the fastest selling album in a long-ass time. They are just saying that with a hyperbolic headline. So, same-old same-old. lol

Is it that hard to believe that people can form opinions non-sales wise? Azealia isn't going to get anywhere near a BB top 10 yet I find the 1991 EP and the Fantasea mixtape musically better than ARTPOP.

oooh, you do? :udidnt:

Spill that delicious truth tea

I root for you. I love you. You, you, you, you.

ARTPOP is way better than Born This Way, tbh

I hate how even a thread about Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson, ends up with comparisons between Gaga albums, LOL

Have we officially entered upon the era of the female MJ? thot.gif

HE HE HELL NO !  :scar:

MJ's success was so much more than charts or sales... He was an icon, when asked MJ? Everybody would mention his iconic dances, looks, music videos... She is not that type of an artist... You are gonna laugh at what you said in few months probably...
