Why other pop artists are still hugely popular, but not Gaga.

I don't think any of these artists had such a messy era as ARTPOP era.

Like seriously, it started wrong since day 1.

First, they should have released Aura as a single IMMEDIATELY after its leak. It got way, way more buzz than Applause did, everybody was commenting about it, it basically put the pop world in shock. And I kinda felt it took away Applause's "ha b---h, I'm back" vibe you know? The most important thing at the time was the fact Applause was competing with Roar, when in fact it should just be the fact Applause was her comeback single. (BTW I love Applause, immensely, it's for sure one of my favorite Gaga singles, but she should have put it as the second one,  or at least as a promo with a video).

But ok, Applause kept the top 10 on BB for much time, did well on the radios... It was not a flop as some say, but since we had the Katycat x Little Monsters stanwar, it was hugely compared with Roar, and that's why some people think it's a flop.

And then Venus was supposed to be the second single, but she changed it for DWUW. I can see now that in that day, the WHOLE era was screwed. This was such a mess. She didn't released the video saying it was because of personal problems, writing an open letter on Lm.com to explain that some people had "betrayed" her (as we know now, Troy Carter) and later she said she didn't liked the video's final result. Why didn't she make another one? Only God knows. But it's a fact that she was away for months during this time, didn't promote the album at all and then came back with the G.U.Y. video, which despite being a masterpiece, was not able to succeed after all that time out of the news.

Now, the only thing I wait for the next pop era is that it can be just as good as the CTC one is being in terms of marketing and organization.

PS: Although I said the era was messy, the album is amazing and so were the live performances. When I look only at the music/video/performances side, ARTPOP was one of my favorite eras, and it still is alongside with BTW.

How many people even understand what ARTPOP means?

But it's okay, because it could mean anything!

Excellent points though, I think there's a fine line between being smart and being pretentious. With a little more input from management, Gaga could shape her vision to stay true to her artistry, but also have her art sold as a product, which, sad as it is, is the aim of the game.

I respect your opinion, here are some facts you might be interested in.

Contemporary Young Artists:

Lady Gaga:

Net Worth: $260 Million (right now before they include ARTRAVE and Cheek To Cheek profits)

Taylor Swift Net Worth: $200 Million (before "1989" profits)

Rhianna Net Worth: $120 Million (new album rumored release Nov. 25)

Katy Perry Net Worth: $110 Million (PRISM released 2013)

Bruno Mars Net Worth: $70 Million (No new albums since 2012)

"Established" Artists

Madonna: Net Worth: $700 Million New album projected release sometime in 2015

Mariah Carey: Net Worth: $510 Million 2014 album "Me. I Am Mariah . . . The Elusive Chanteuse.†Flopped

Celine Dion: Net Worth: $500 Million 2013 album "Loved Me Back to Life" Flopped

Cher: Net Worth: $305 Million (2014 D2K Tour starts Nov. 2014)

Jennifer Lopez: Net Worth: $300 Million 2014 "A.K.A." album Flopped

Babies still in Diapers:

Justin Bieber: $200 Million (2014 album collaboration with Cody Simpson unknown release date)

Ariana Grande:$185 million (2014 "My Everything" Debut at No.1 on the Billboard 200)

Selena Gomez: $16 Million ( 2014 "Greatest Hits" rumored release Dec. 2014)

Iggy Azalea: $6 Million (2014 "The New Classic"debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart)

As the decline of CD sales continues and singles sales more prominent, Artists record labels, Management and the Artist must toil blood sweat and tears, harder than ever to get fans to purchase full cd's, tracks and dole out money for expensive concert tours and merchandise. Along with the advent of people buying tracks and immediately posting them to YouTube etc. for free listening and subsequent free downloading, the future of the music industry is perilously on ice with an uncertain outcome for profit. The less fans buy cd's and tracks, the higher the costs for future generations. So, our favorite Artists have to strike while the irons are hot. Lady Gaga's foray diversifying into Jazz and collaborating with Mr. Bennett, is a Genius business move by Mr. Joe Germanotta, Interscope Records, and Artist Nation. One thing is certain, do not underestimate this powerhouse team. Lady G is only 28 years old. She's nowhere near ready to have her success "sacrificed". She's just starting.

Once again, I agree with you. I am just trying to a--lyze why Gaga's current success hasn't been as big as

It used to be.

That is why when we talk about talent and uniqueness we think about Gaga and not other artists. It's not impossible for her to maintain her unique and controversial style yet remain her popularity at the same time, it is possible but she needs to promote her stuff properly.

I think people read too much into this.

The reason why the GP is sick of Gaga is not because "she's too complex", it's because to them, her ish is getting old.

She relied so heavily on her clothes and costumes so early in her career that people ONLY associate her with her outrageous fashion, and it was never really about the music. Now that she's constantly trying to tell people to take her seriously as an artist and constantly telling people she's original and great, the GP is taking her a pretentious and trying to be someone she's not.

She honestly just needs to quiet down the "I'm an artist" speech down for a bit and focus on marketing her music right. To most people, she writes mindless pop just like everyone else.

At the end of the day, it's the decision of the singer-songwriter on whether they'd pander to the music preference of the greater majority. Obviously, Gaga chose not to, even from the very beginning. If she had, she should've released a ton of singles by now written by the industry's most in-demand hit-makers (Calvin Harris, Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Sia, Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder, et.al). But she didn't. She loves to provoke, and provocation isn't a thing which everyone, or the majority at least, loves. And it's the main reason why her last huge hit (4M+ seller) was from 3 years ago.

But again, at this point where she has moved over 150 million claimed records worldwide with just 4 global smash singles (JD, PF, BR, BTW) and three solid smash albums with more than 6 million units moved WW each (TF, TFM, BTW), Gaga's place among the world's most successful artists of all time is pretty much secured already. Whether her next album becomes a commercial bomb or not, it'd barely matter to me. I'm here for her music anyway. She may no longer be the most popular and successful for this decade, but she's still among the most popular and successful music acts of all time. She has already left a huge mark in the industry, and that's something any future 'flop' could never take away from her.

this... there is such a thing as going over-board... im a fan and theres stuff i think she went too far on that frankly i didnt enjoy :millie:

She went too far and it turned people off.

She knows being different and standing out was favourable for her... But i think she forgot the general rule that applies to everything "too much of anything isnt good". She crossed the line far too often

this

even madonna knew about this

that's why she had her ray of light/bedtime stories after that Erotica era, she knows how to explode in controversy and then turn it down to give people a break

Applause wasn't big enough and DWUW was a dud.

That's the only reason.

Applause might've been hurt by Katy, it's hard to get radio play when you are competing with someone who pays the radio stations to play their music. If DWUW had a music video, it could've risen slowly on airplay and done really well, let's not beat around the bush about that.

At the point of G.U.Y., radio was mostly uninterested.

It's all about the radio. The radio controls what the masses listen to and therefore what they like. So the most successful are the ones that the radio plays the most. That doesn't necessarily translate into album sales though, as we've seen.
