Taylor Swift's young fans not savvy enough to steal her music

My friend brought this up yesterday and I think it's an excellent point. The leaking of ones album is a huge setback when it comes to sales, especially considering how many pop culture aficionados are also very technologically capable. I always wondered why the media never comments on this as a factor in sales. Swift has a lot of young fans who get her albums by asking Mommy to pick it up from the store. This definitely has a bearing on how much her sales usually slay.

I remember one time my roommate called Gaga's album Artflop to make fun of it's sales, but I remember that he illegally downloaded it when it leaked. This was amusing to me, not necessarily in a positive way.

I also remember after Beyonce's album came out news sites were talking about how great the sales were (which they should have been, naturally) but what bothered me was they all kept talking about how many times the album had been downloaded illegally and how her sales would have been had those people also bought the album. When ARTPOP leaked no such conversations happened.

All in all, Taylor absolutely benefits from not only having an older, loyal fan base that even though they could pirate 1989, they wont. But she benefits even more from the fact that many of her fans couldn't pirate her music, even if they wanted to. I wonder how music industry would be different if music just couldn't be downloaded illegally, and how the sales would be affected. Thoughts?

They're loyal because she's really good at marketing.

She should be applauded.

I feel like their loyalty comes from the quality of her music, not her marketing? (like I saw mentioned somewhere else on GGD she doesn't do the marketing herself, so really its her team that should be applauded for that)

I don't think it takes much to download music illegally, like I don't think it's hard to do so at a younger age :laughga: I think she just appeals to a wider demographic so there's more chance that her sales will be higher

Real fans who want to support...will buy the album. Shady haters or casual listeners will pirate...

I think artists that appeal to young straight men are hurt worst by downloading.

Older people prefer having CDs. Gays are loyal to their icons. Young girls are more law-abiding or less tech savvy.

About Taylor though. I understand what you're saying, but I don't think it's only in her fanbase. I believe there are still a lot of people who just don't want to illegally download or pirate an album. I am one of those people.

I'm pretty sure a lot of Gaga fans didn't listen to the leak or illegally download it.

And I'm not saying it's because of loyalty or anything, that has nothing to do with it (there are no better fans or bad fans tbh), it's just that some of us want to wait for the official date, that's all.

And you know, I'm pretty sure some Swifties DID listen to the leak :p

But she does.

She's behind it all.

She was the first artist on the label, she started it up.

I was thinking like ten or eleven year olds who maybe don't have a ton of access to their computers.

What a great way to put it into words! I love that point.

And yeah, you're right. I definitely don't pirate music, I like to support the artists I stan for. I just also think it's funny that all these Gaga fans who probably talk about her flopping probably didn't buy the album.

Even if they could download ( I wouldn't past young kids to know how to do things in the digital age) they wouldn't. If you're a fan you're going to actually buy the album to support, not download it. She just happens to have that many fans

Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

Tbh :madge:

She's managed to capture the essence of Pop music without it being fickle -- resulting in non-fickle stans and fans a like

私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから

So I'm to believe she does the marketing for Big Machine? That she makes the calls to Target and Yahoo and whatnot?

That's an interesting point ! And maybe sadly true :fat:

I'm saying that she makes all of the decisions.

I'm sure she has a team, mostly of family. She's the calculated genius behind it all.
