It's interesting because it is just so much more complicated than people think. I don't know what we can do about radical Islam anymore cause nothing seems to work. What crazy times we live in!

ben's a fool in this video. he keeps repeating things they literally are not saying, right after they say the exact opposite of what he says, then shouts them down when they try to clarify with throwaway faux outrage, which is so harmful to this discussion. i love sam harris. he doesn't knee jerk to anything. one of the most honest intellectuals i've seen.

I'm glad Affleck is taking it so seriously. It gives me hope in people's sanity tbh.

I'm shocked that (post)modern evolutions in Islamic thinking are 100% ignored.

The fact that they can only use ****ing polls to make their point :sharon: They're so lazy.

This whole discussion is fascinating because the West is obsessed with projecting their own "natural" (which is complete bs) values and ideals on communities that just developed differently. When you cannot take the origin and context of Islamic culture seriously, then you're bound to misunderstand the whole topic and will definitely not find a constructive solution.

The fact that they don't even mention international political strategy in the regions where Islam is ruling, is just baffling to me. Too simplified, too uninformed, too bigoted.

I just bought Sam Harris' book "Waking Up", I'm excited to read it.

I understand! Yes, I fear that too ...

What's there to debate about radical Islam?

Radical Islam is bad, end of...

Of course it is, but in this video they are arguing about Islam generally. Ben Affleck stated that most moslems aren't bad or terrorists etc. while the others claim the trigger lies within the belief of the religion itself, so it's a sensitive and difficult subject I guess.

Zacharias, I told you over and over and over again that I don't hate youJust because someone has different beliefs than I have doesn't mean I hate them, LOL. That would be really childish - I mean I have many friends that are religious or spiritual and about 90% of the people in my area have a different political opinion and/or worldviews/taste etc. than I have.

I think you are a really nice guy and you are always very polite and you have a lovely sense for humor.

I just don't agree with what you believe about good/evil etc. ...

Just because someone has a different religion etc. or I don't agree with a person on certain things doesn't mean necessarily I don't like them - I like the person for their personality, if I would only like people that had exactly the same opinion as me I would probably be quite lonely haha. I love to explore different cultures and opinions and I'm very interested in religions it's just that I personally don't believe in them. I'm interested in their history and so forth, but my approach to the world is more towards logic and science, although I aim for absurdity too since I'm an artist.

My parents are also christians and believe in Jesus and God and everything, I don't hate them for that, they were raised differently and I am tolerant.

You started the thread about evolution and for me evolution is a scientistic fact (all the bones etc. are proof - also Ötzi der Schneemensch is a proof, because he didn't look like we humans look now, so for me that's proof that apes developed differently etc.), than you said it's not and that Satan is the reason for people becoming evil and that's why I think it's ignorant and fundamental, I just don't understand your thoughts on this subject and I tried to discuss it with you but no matter what I was saying, you basically seemed to ignore it. But this hasn't to do with you as a human being, do you understand?

Look, Gaga believes in God too and I'm a huge Gaga fan (but Gaga also believes in evolution btw., she once said the Monster Ball was inspired by Darwinism and the progression of cell into creature and so on... But anyway), I'm not hating people because they have a different look on the world, I just don't understand certain things like when you are saying the bible is true because I've read the bible many times and there's so much in it that I personally just don't agree with/believe (and also if you look at egyptian mythology for example there are many similarities like twelve apostles etc. and it seems very unlikely, but anyway ...).

Do you understand? :) I really like you! :runhug:

as usual, sam harris debates with class and grace. ben affleck is a moron

I think bill maher's humour is what's throwing people off here. if they had allowed sam to speak more, their POV would have come across better, and people wouldn't automatically assume them to be islamophobic white men

unfortunately as it stands, I have to keep seeing 60k note gifsets of ben's "argument" on tumblr

yup. people are so quick to applaud the first person who crassly shouts MAN THATS SO RACIST U R FOCKING ASSHOLES JUST ADMIT IT STR8 UP UR A RACIST THATS BULLSHT as if they're actually defending people from people in klan robes or something. what they don't realise is that people like ben in this video are the real ones causing the harm because they encourage complacency and indifference to a growing and violent movement. it doesn't matter that without the geopolitics and foreign policy which as sam mentioned in the video, large numbers of these people hold warped views about women and gays and other minorities and are actively oppressing them and carrying out punishments (sometimes capital) against them. all completely nothing to do with the big bad western imperialist forces. but of course even what muslims have to say or do about their own religion doesn't seem to matter to some. we just don't get it, apparently.
