This chart actually places countries into weighted categories based on the size of their music markets and then assigns an arbitrary number of points for chart positions in all countries in each weight-class. So, it is a useful metric that does indicate success, but it isn't really an average chart position. It tends to overemphasize very small music markets and music markets that are relatively small for their class, and it underemphasizes markets like the US that are much larger than other markets in their classes. Most of all, this metric differentiates truly global artists from artists that are just popular in maybe one major music market, but who don't chart at all in most countries.
