Probably. Gaga's love for her albums as a whole has turned bumerang to her mahy times. She just wanted to show more sides of her album than just the singles and eventhough this is admirable she should have known better back then that she shouldn;t have taken that risk. Applause had serious chances to top BB that week. The song was at #9 without the streaming and sales boost (#10 with Dope). With the huge streaming boost and the sales boost from the performance Gaga would have taken another #1 an maybe things would be very different now. Anyway I think that what really happened is that they couldn't really guess the impact of the YT awards (which happened for the first time) and they probably though that there wouldn't be a big boost so they decided to promote a new song and give a bigger picture of the album. She decided to perform a promotion single. It was a painfull time for her, we all know why she performed Dope that night... It was more important for her to do so then to just promote a single what would every other popstar do... Gaga is different of course and I love her for that! Yeah, I don't think anyone saw that boost coming. Either Applause or DWUW would have been better choices, but hey... Well you said it - they manipulated her career and when she said enough they abandonded ARTPOP so = she didn't want to listen to them (they probably wanted her to perform DWUW) so instead she performed Dope to express her pain! I am comparing October sales to November sales ?
