Probably one of the biggest piece of international news in the last few days. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/30/us-hongkong-china-idUSKCN0HN03Q20140930 Basically, HK is protesting against China for not following through on their "promises" that they will have a certain set of democratic rights for the next 50 (?) years after their reunification with China in 1997 (HK was given by China to the UK as a colony decades ago). One of these promises is that HK will be able to vote for whoever they want during their "mayoral"/Chief Executive election. Currently, all candidates for the election must be reviewed by China before they are approved to be "eligible" to run for HK Chief Executive because China wants to make sure the Chief Executive is loyal to both HK and China (since HK is still part of China but have been very vocal about their wants to separate since reuniting with China in 1997). HKers are protesting in the heart of the financial district, Central, in order to make an impact and stall the Chinese financial/economic system in HK as a lot of international business matters happen there. It has attracted a lot of media and social media attention over the past few days after the HK police were instructed to use tear gas and pepper spray to try and ward off the crowd. However HKers are persistent and have gotten HK students abroad to put up yellow ribbons as their profile pictures to spread awareness. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
