Are minority groups such as blacks socially and economically disadvantaged? Of course, but placing blame on a single race is counter productive. Its like Gays saying "listen up straight people" in their fight for marriage equality

But that's what I asked you before, what other race is contributing to the social and economic disadvantages besides white people? Do you expect them to add some long disclaimer to every race discussion so you can feel personally absolved from the situation?

Part of the video was how the younger generation is still swept up in racist ideologies even though they say it's dead.

Because the court systems are for more likely to convict minorities of crimes than the majority.

Hence the frisking statistic. Frisking doesn't mean you actually have anything, but minorities are 10 times more likely to get automatically frisked than white people because we're institutionally let to think they're always guilty or up to something.

This is a cop out argument.

If you can't acknowledge that the violence within the black community is a problem and work to fix it, then people will continue to think that black people are more violent in general.

There are reasons why violence is so prevalent in minority groups, but can we please not pretend it's because cops are out to get them. No one takes that argument seriously because even if it is based in truth, it isn't the whole truth by any means.

Same

****ING SAME

Institutional racism is a different issue than general racism. A black person can be racist toward a Chinese person and a Latino can be racist toward a white person.

I was with friends (who happen to be black) and one person who was friends with one of my friends (also black). They were going on about how weird white people are. How over-friendly and quirky we are. The one person who wasn't my friend turned to me and said, "Don't worry. I'm sure you're different. It's okay I say this because I have white friends."

It wasn't even meant in an ironic way.

So.

But the entire point of this video was statistics and statements regarding institutional racism, there's really no point in trying to bring up other types of prejudice.

This is a cop out argument.

Ok, what are these reasons that minorities just have this predisposition to do violent things that the majority just seems to be lacking?

You said it better than I did.

Actually, there is.

"HEY WHITE PEOPLE"

I am tired of being blamed for my ancestors. I know that minority groups have it much harder in certain aspects. However, racism is being glossed over and forgotten when it comes to white people, but racism and systematic racism are exploded with minority groups. Racism does happen to white people. Not usually on the scale as minority groups. All racism is bad. Nevertheless, but ignoring parts of the issue will not make it go away.

63% of the US is white. 13% is Black. I understand that whites are less likely to be found guilty of crimes, but percentage wise, we can't deny that minorities commit more crimes and that prisons are full of Blacks and Hispanics. If prisons weren't full of minorities maybe all the stigma towards certain races would stop

I'd argue that the stigma does help put some of those bodies in prisons in the 1st place. There's something odd about 13% of a population making up 30-40% of the prison population. I'm not exactly sure how to phrase it.

Thank you.

People like issues being simple.

e.g.

Minorities are often thrown in jail more because white cops.

People like clear-cut. They want one person responsible. To accept the fact that the issue is complex makes it too daunting.

White people are born into debt. The debt that their possibly racist ancestors left for them and is continuously forced upon.

I don't think you understand the fault in that logic. You admit that there is discrimination in who gets suspected of crimes, and ultimately who is put in jail for these crimes, yet you use the percentage of people in these jails who are of a certain race (the very same people you just admitted were disproportionately more likely to be put there on the basis of race alone), as justification for the claim that they must commit more crimes. I'm guessing your assumption is that the discrimination that goes into the legal system can't be SO bad that the numbers would STILL come out to be majority minority races in the prisons. Yet we just saw from the video that minorities were around 10x as likely to be frisked by a police officer (something like 8% to 80%, I'm not going to watch it again). And that's just at ONE step in the judicial process. That's not taking into consideration search warrants, arrests, interrogations, trials, sentencing hearings, etc (not to mention the discriminatory laws in place before we even get to the judicial system). We can't look at who's in jail as an estimate for who actually commits crime.

The Professor

But white males control the vast majority of capital and hiring resources in this country, and are thereby able to make the (as we know) discriminatory hiring decisions that directly affect black people and keep them systematically oppressed. So, technically white individuals (obviously not all white individuals) ARE to blame.

I understand your point, you're saying the only individuals who oppress blacks are white (which i would agree with), however its not the same as saying all whites are oppressors. My only objection to this video is the "hey white people" which directly states that all whites are to blame. Gays could say "hey heteros" but its wouldnt make sense because there are straights that fight for our cause and support us. Its was a poor choice of words.

I see it as a cycle. Stigma = more minorities in jail = more stigma. But we can't place the entire blame on stigmas and forget people actually commit crimes out of their own will.

What do you mean ancestors? A lot of crap is still going on today. You are not being blamed of anything, no one is saying you have some direct hand in causing these inequalities by existing, but we should at least be conscientious that we do benefit from the system in a large amount of ways. It's just how it is. Systematic racism is explored so heavily because it affects nearly all aspects of life.

I agree-it's one thing to peg someone personally responsible for something someone else did, especially a long time ago. But the fact is the benefits/privilege/what-have-you is still there, and people benefit whether they think of it or not.

Of course I benefit from the system. I also don't benefit from the system because I am:

-Non-heteros-xual

-Overweight

-Mentally ill

The system is rarely 100% for anyone. It is less fair to certain groups. The system isn't clear-cut as in "all white people gain." Women don't necessarily benefit. Gays don't necessarily benefit. Etc.

I was born into debt. Whether you see it or not white people are seen as the oppressors.

I know I benefit to some degree, but the system isn't that simple.

I work in the Intercultural-International Center on campus. We have personal seminars relating to inequality and social justice. I am not new to this.

But then what do we rely on then? All the world sees is minorities in jail. How about we start trying to eliminate crime regardless of race? I feel like sometimes the disproportion is used as an excuse to justify a certain race's mistakes.
