Obama gives a speech on plans to defeat ISIS.

WASHINGTON  President Obama said Wednesday night that he was ordering a significantly expanded military campaign against Sunni militants in the Middle East that includes American airstrikes in Syria and the deployment of nearly 500 more military advisers to Iraq. But he sought to dispel fears that the United States was embarking on a repeat of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

 

In a televised speech to the nation from the State Floor of the White House, Mr. Obama said the United States was recruiting a global coalition to “degrade and ultimately destroy†the militants, from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. He warned that the effort would require years of sustained effort.

 

“We will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are,†Mr. Obama said. “That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq. This is a core principle of my presidency: If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.†ISIL is an alternative name for ISIS.

 

The president took pains to distinguish between the military action he was putting in motion and the two wars begun by his predecessor, President George W. Bush. He likened this campaign to the highly targeted airstrikes that the United States has carried out for several years against terrorism suspects in Yemen and Somalia, few of which have been made public.

 

After enduring harsh criticism for saying in a news conference two weeks ago that he did not have a strategy for dealing with ISIS in Syria, Mr. Obama sketched out a plan that will involve heightened American training and arming of moderate Syrian rebels to fight the militants. Saudi Arabia has agreed to provide bases for the training of those forces.

 

The White House has asked Congress to authorize the plan to train and equip rebels  something the Central Intelligence Agency has been doing covertly and on a much smaller scale  but Mr. Obama said he had the authority necessary to expand the broader campaign.

“These American forces will not have a combat mission  we will not get dragged into another ground war in Iraq,†Mr. Obama pledged, adding that the broader mission he was outlining for American military forces “will be different from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; it will not involve American combat troops fighting on foreign soil.â€

 

For all of Mr. Obama’s efforts to reassure the public, his remarks were a stark admission of the threat posed by the militants, whose lightning rampage through Iraq and Syria and videotaped beheading of two American journalists have reignited fears of radical terrorism.

 

The president’s remarks, on the eve of the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, will thrust the United States into a civil war in Syria that he had long sought to avoid, and will return the country to a significant military presence in Iraq, from which Mr. Obama withdrew the last American combat soldiers at the end of 2011.

I appreciate his plan but he's basically asking ISIS to take over the US by publicly addressing stuff like this they take these speeches seriously and are very dangerous, I hope he's careful about this.

I'm sure he knows what he's getting into.  But, on the other hand, you wouldn't want your citizens to think you're just slacking off by just saying "we're not sending troops over seas again".  I think the speech was the right thing to do.

I honestly feel he has better control over these situations compared to Bush. Bush was just  

 

Obviously, Obama is not great when it comes to being a strategist but I feel he needs to pull a Truman and end this quickly if this is what he really wants. Not saying he has to nuke them but he needs to do something quick and powerful if he really wants to vanquish ISIS. I don't feel a long, drawn out plan to end ISIS will actually put ISIS down.

Pretty much. I know plenty of people who regret voting for him again. 

 

On topic, I feel like ISIS, ISIL, IS whatever the hell it's called now needs to be eradicated, but of course the US is gonna be the first to jump in, like always. Why can't anyone else do it? Tired of the US getting involved in this sh*t. He said it's just gonna be airstrikes for now but I'm sure this will escalate and we'll have another war on our hands

Like hes a nice guy. As a person i prefer him to Bush. Well, in everyway i prefer him to Bush cause Bush was probably Americas worst President to date.

 

But even though Obama genuinely seems to want to help the people and certain matters, he seems to fail to consider possible downsides to his plans even when hes warned

 

He also seems too proud and worries about his legacy too much and kinda refuses to back down from certain things even when evidence starts to point out that an idea it wasnt as good as originally thought

 

Its difficult to always predict how things will work and we shouldnt blame him everytime one of his ideas fail. But he should be humble enough to recognise those times and back down. Ive rarely ever seen him do that in the past 6 years

Well in his defense, the pickings were slim for a new president. In 2008, it was either Obama or John McCain and his self-destructing Alaskan MILF that could see Russia from her house. Then in 2012, it was either Obama or Mitt "I hate half of the country and I'm not responsible for them" Romney. So I mean... by the process of elimination, Obama was the best of the two major candidates.
