Swinefest damaged ARTPOP's reception.

It sounds soulless regardless. Her first 3 albums for the most part sound just as good or better than their live counterparts.

I don't think it sounds soulless.

I actually felt pretty underwhelmed by the songs at Swinefest as well. Most got mildly better on the album, but still fairly underwhelming for me.

Um.... :rip:

Gurl everyone did not expect super autotuned vocals and a ****ty breakdown on Swine

I loved Sexxx Dreams slow, mysterious & Sexxxy, however the new bridge and vocals SLAYED!

The Hee Hees on ARTPOP were cut a lot

Jewels N' Drugs lacked the breakdown

That's about it for me

1) The breakdown on Swine was shortened about 5 seconds. That's all.

2) *Having trouble identifying why you feel the tone of the Swinefest version gives you "mysterious and s-xy" while the studio version doesn't.

3) The hee hee's on ARTPOP were made softer, not "cut".

4) The "breakdown" on J&D is the exact same instrumental that plays during Twista's verse during the studio version.

Exactly. When people are like, "THE INSTRUMENTAL WAS SO MUCH BETTER LIVE," like, child, it's because it was LIVE.

You can produce a song to retain the feeling and impact of live instruments. Many songs on the album are produced in a very flat, hollow fashion so the production doesn't hit hard or have much energy to it. Gaga's vocals also lack depth and energy much of the time as well. It's not a question of live vs. studio, it's all in the poor production/mixing choices.

Cool. All she wanted to do was give you guys a treat and preview some of the goodies she had been working on. I'm sorry that you feel the need to spin it into something so negative and unappreciative.
I do appreciate it. And I also like the live and studio versions. But I think that for many, Swinefest did ruin the studio album reception.

I don't understand why you are always trying to put people down for not "focusing on the music" and focusing too much on all the other crap, when most of your threads are like this one.

Isn't this thread ultimately about the music?

The Sexxx Dreams studio version sounds more metallic, her vocals are more upfront, it's more pop, it's faster, whereas the Swinefest/rehearsal version was more ambient with its echoing effects, its slower speed, the 80's type synths used in the pre-chorus and a general instrumental makeover that made it feel smoother and more sensuous. It felt more "3D", felt more alive, breathed more and let the vocals work with the instrumental rather than have them be separate entities

Jeez, alrighty then.

Actually just kidding, that's a really great interpretation

I somewhat agree, and somewhat disagree.

The concepts we heard at Swinefest were great, however, i think when the songs were finalized and put on the album, everything somewhat more polished, clearer, and better.

I don't get the hate for Swine's studio version, because it is exactly the same as the Live version, except the live version has live instruments.

And it is so funny at how fast this fanbase likes to change their minds and flip the switch on their opinions. Before ARTPOP was released everyone was so excited for electronic music and i remember people saying they wanted less "real" instruments... Now i see the majority saying the "edm" sound was "so dated" and they want to see more "real instruments." Which is baffling because no one is ever satisfied apparantly

The concepts of the songs on ARTPOP weren't all suited for electronic music. The album could have been full of EDM and been fantastic, but when there's songs like Sexxx Dreams that rely on a sensuous 80's sound, Fashion! which takes influence from the 70's, the emotions expressed through the real instrumentation of Swine that leads into the electronic portion of the song, and MANiCURE's instrumental fullness in Swinefest, having too much EDM causes the songs to sound like they're fitting into the sonic mold of an album when it should be the other way around. There are enough electronic songs on ARTPOP that preserving the essence of the songs I referred to previously would not be an issue or take away from the album. In fact, it would only serve to enhance the sound and variety of the album.

To me, it seems like she had her mind set on an electronic, modern sounding album, took the concepts that were inspired by different genres and tried to bring them into more modern sounding production, but the final result ended up being tinny.

I personally see the mixture of old styles with modern/futuristic sounds on ARTPOP as something creative and fresh rather than something forced.

Her use of electronic sounds was neither modern or futuristic, nor did it preserve any of the old styles presented in the original Swinefest versions. Where the influence breathed in the live renditions, it was stifled in the studio.

With music, I like some live versions better, I like some studio versions better. I judge objectively where the influence of the so comes from and how it is represented in the song. To me, Sexxx Dreams was a gem in the Swinefest/Rehearsal version. In the studio version, it is nothing.
