Willy Wonka 4
As many of you may have seen, Lily Allen recently commented on the success of her album. Lily Allen has questioned the quality of material on her latest album 'Sheezus' while also suggesting that she suffered from a lack of confidence while making the album.Having previously blamed her (now ex) manager Todd Interland for the wrong song choices, controversial singer Lily now muses that maybe her music just wasn’t good enough this time round. “I put my trust in other people, which I don’t usually do. I usually go with my own gut feeling but maybe I wasn’t feeling as confident as I have in the past because of all the hormones." "The first thing I came back with was Hard Out Here and that was important to me, a real statement of intent, even though you couldn’t put it on the radio over here because it had too much swearing." “I thought it did really well and then management and the label chose to go with Air Balloon and I just think starting with something really aggressive and in your face and then going in a different *direction... people need to know what they are getting.†Rather than sparking another musical hiatus, the drastic chart tail-off has made Lil, 29, determined to press ahead. She says: “Maybe the songs aren’t good enough this time, who knows? I just know I can’t wait to get back into the studio.†Like Gaga, her album commercially underperformed. She initially blamed her manager (who she no longer works with), but is now commenting that the lack of success may have simply been due to the quality of her music. There are obvious parallels to Gaga. Some users stated that they wished Gaga handled similar situations with the same maturity, while others said that artists shouldn't apologize for their product. LordDisick 1
imo however idk, i would appreciate the truth, but at the same time i feel she doesnt owe us it, you know? were just the public audience waiting for music, her personal business is with her and her team/label
Yanko 9,860
who knows maybe it was because of the single choices
Redstreak 6,653
I thought it was very mature of Lily. It showed an eagerness to want to learn from her own mistakes that she personally saw. Now I wouldn't want someone to apologize over commercial success or lack there of, and I don't think it's a good logical connection that quality and commercial success always go hand in hand, but if you feel you personally didn't give something your all or your best, it shows a lot about your character if you're willing to admit that. Now I don't know how this would work with Gaga, none of us do. If she truly feels ARTPOP was her best effort for that album, then she has nothing to apologize for. Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~
SEANGT 5,294
Well, this is why everyone loves Lily. Pretty much the most care-free person in pop music. Makes statements. Makes fun music too. Hopefully she does make an even better album soon As for Gaga, I think she really believes in ARTPOP still. I also believe she thinks the album did fine, and her/her team just messed up the release of the singles. Which is mostly true. Maybe the next cycle will be better. ryhanna 3,507
This won't end well. I feel like Lily and Gaga's situations are quite different. Lily said that her music didn't go the way it should have because she was in a bad place and let people kind of manipulate the music she made. From the sounds of it, Gaga feels that she's kind of had a power struggle or something, with her management wanting one thing and Gaga another. If that's truly the case, then what is there to apologise for? She's making the best out of a bad situation. Anyway, it was really quite brave of Lily to admit that she felt like she'd made a mistake. If by chance, Gaga feels that way too, then sure, it'd be fantastic if she were brave enough to admit it to the world. I couldn't picture Gaga ever doing that, though. She seems like the kind of person to stand by her work even if deep down she's disappointed with it.
Altair 2,000
Music on ARTPOP was what the gods used to listen to tbh. I'm still baffled at how terrible ARTPOP performed. :(
brownie 5
I like ARTPOP's message but musically it's pretty generic and messy. She can do better.
Essence 235
Lily was noticeably less invested in Sheezus though. She said it herself. Gaga was utterly devoted to ARTPOP. The situations aren't parallel, sorry... Gaga doesn't need to apologize for an underperformance. Lily only apologized for her belief that she gave up some artistic integrity. ItsTommyBitch 12,640
Lily handled it well. I do think the album tracks of Sheezus were kind of weak compared to songs like Sheezus and Hard out Here and some of them seemed QUITE, filler-ish, even though i hate the term. I think that there are SOME parallels we could draw with Gaga, but in my honest opinion i don't think that the music was simply "bad" or not up to par at all. I think the bad press and bad management has definitely hurt Gaga's image to the General Public (not that it was ever always a positive image) and that contributed to the comparatively bad sales. Gaga should pull a lily and just release some demos or tracks that didn't make it because why not though tbh (I'm kidding) 私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから
Elizabeth 450
ARTPOP as an album is not a bad product and I don't think Gaga should apologise for it's 'underperformance'.
Willy Wonka 4
Lily was noticeably less invested in Sheezus though. Gaga was utterly devoted to ARTPOP. You're setting me up for a joke about blackouts and lack of promotion, you know that, right? ARTPOP as an album is not a bad product and I don't think Gaga should apologise for it's 'underperformance'. But when you think about her comments during the Fall and Winter, she was constantly shifting blame to others. If nothing was failing or underperforming, there would be no blame to shift. Essence 235
You're setting me up for a joke about blackouts and lack of promotion, you know that, right? I'm talking about the music though. Gaga put a lot of time into it and was clearly proud of it while Lily from the beginning said she didn't like the songs that were chosen as singles... I mean why should Gaga apologize for underperformance? Lily only did so because she herself thought it wasn't her best, not because it was received in a certain way. Mama Ru 994
I appreciate Lily Allen's candor, but if Gaga loves ARTPOP, there's no need for her to pretend otherwise. For the record, I think ARTPOP is a great record and I don't think sales should be the litmus test for quality. Im blonde, I'm skinny, I'm rich, and I'm a little bit of a bitch. Chic 20,830
I don't think Gaga is that type of person to apologize, it isn't her fault really if some things just don't catch on. She's the kind of person who would sink with the ship even if it went way below the surface to the deepest depths of the ocean floor, into the outer layers of the earth, plummeted through the nine stages of hell and hit the planet's core
