I agree, but you can't blame the Dutch media for reporting primerely about the 173 dutch victems. Such a tragedy has a big impact on a small country like this, many people here want to know things about their family/friends. Also it's quite normal for the politics in every country to be concerned about their own citizens more than those from elsewhere. I don't know what news you've been following but not a single national news source is solely focusing on just the Dutch on board, they practically always mention all the other nationalities. The fact they talk a bit more about the impact on the Dutch is because it was a flight by a Dutch airliner as well as a Malaysian one and thus a Dutch KLM flight was taken down + the government and companies/officials have explaining to do to Dutch citizens and the people that stay behind, of course you'll hear more about this when people from your country were involved, quite an ognorant comment by Elizabeth :dead: How am I being ignorant? In reply to both quoted posts I was more specifically talking about the Australian news, and some of the comments made by some Australian politicians, and perhaps should've made that clearer in my original post. Until noon of Jul 18th 2014 representatives of the Ukrainian government have not been granted access to the crash site, though. International investigators have not yet reached the area. The attack was likely carried out using an SA-11 surface-to-air missile system, or a similar class of weapon, according to the assessment, the official said. The SA-11 is an early version of the Buk antiaircraft system that has been identified by Ukrainian authorities as the weapon used to bring down the airliner. The U.S. official cautioned that the assessment is not final and that U.S. a--lysts are still investigating. “Our assessment is that Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 . . . was likely downed by an SA-11 missile, operated from a separatist-held location in eastern Ukraine,†U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power told the U.N. Security Council on Friday. She added that “because of the technical complexity of the SA-11,†it was unlikely that the separatists could have effectively operated it on their own. “We cannot rule out Russian technical assistance,†Power said. Waiting for another source tbh Well, of course it was, I think that's pretty obvious anyways I mean, it's Eastern Ukraine, where these pro-Russian separatists are terrorizing people and basically doing anything to make sure that the Ukrainian government loses control of that region and the Russian army takes over. Not to mention that the plane was shot with one of these babies (called "Buk"), as the separatists already confessed that it were them who did such a thing. And it is known that only Russian and Ukrainian armies have these tools. Now, why would the Ukrainian army do such a thing anyways? But while Russia's pro-Kremlin media offered varying accounts of how the Boeing 777 may have been brought down, they agreed on who was responsible: the Ukrainian government. For Moscow, Kiev ands pro-Russian separatist rebels alike, the information war to sway public opinion over who is to blame for Thursday's disaster will be crucial to how the crisis in eastern Ukraine develops. Hours after the crash that killed 298 people, Putin pointed the finger of blame at his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko, saying it would not have happened if Kiev had not ended a ceasefire with the separatists. Since then, reporting from Russia's tightly-controlled media, which has favored the rebels throughout the conflict, has largely supported Putin's conclusions, sharply diverging from Western coverage of the tragedy. Russian media drew parallels with a Russian passenger jet carrying 78 people which was mistakenly shot down by the Ukrainian military in 2001 as it flew over the Black Sea. An aviation source cited by Kremlin-owned news outlet RT also pushed the idea that Ukrainian forces may have fired a rocket at the Malaysian Boeing, mistaking it for Putin's jet returning from a summit in Brazil. "The contours of the airplanes are in general similar, the linear dimensions are also very similar and regarding the coloring, from a sufficiently long distance, they are practically identical," the source said. As is often the case with pro-Kremlin news outlets, the narrative could not be more different from the one reported by Western media, which RT television criticized for "unleashing a post-crash factless blame game against Russia". Any indication that the rebels shot down the plane with weapons seized either from Russian or Ukrainian stockpiles could raise pressure for stronger action against Russia. The day before the crash, the United States had slapped its toughest sanctions yet on Russia for its role in the separatist conflict that has brought Moscow's ties with the West to their lowest since the Cold War. Russia's LifeNews online outlet carried a slightly different account, saying witnesses had seen a Ukrainian fighter jet behind the Malaysian airliner, which was flying at an altitude of 10 km (32,800 feet) - so high it would be barely visible from the ground. Russian news reports supported their arguments with the alleged Twitter feed of a Spaniard believed to work as an aviation dispatcher at Kiev's Borisypil airport. "Two Ukrainian jet fighters were noticed next to the airplane before it disappeared from the radar, all of three minutes beforehand," the alleged dispatcher was quoted as saying by Interfax and pro-Russian Twitter accounts.
