The little girl died Wednesday after being hospitalized with meningitis-like symptoms. Her death was caused by Naegleria fowleri, a rare, brain-eating amoeba that is found in fresh water and swimming pools that aren’t properly chlorinated. The virus enters the body through the nose and travels up to the brain. Its symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, neck stiffness and confusion. Knife 7,107 Posted July 13, 2014 Share Posted July 13, 2014 You have to be very careful not to swim in natural bodies of warm water (rivers and lakes) because these types of amoebas thrive there. I've read that it's also possible to come into contact with these types of amoebas in drinking water (tap).
