A grieving Kansas family is struggling with the loss of their “precious daughter†who succumbed to an uncommon organism that lives in fresh water.

The little girl died Wednesday after being hospitalized with meningitis-like symptoms. Her death was caused by Naegleria fowleri, a rare, brain-eating amoeba that is found in fresh water and swimming pools that aren’t properly chlorinated.

The virus enters the body through the nose and travels up to the brain.

Its symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, neck stiffness and confusion. It is almost always fatal.

You have to be very careful not to swim in natural bodies of warm water (rivers and lakes) because these types of amoebas thrive there.

I've read that it's also possible to come into contact with these types of amoebas in drinking water (tap). Some people have died of encephalitis after using nasal irrigators that contained tap water with the amoeba in it.

horrible, that's when you can't be prepared for any of what could eventually happen cause nature is involved

So sad, that's why you have to clean your pools and not get into dirty lakes and oceans. Those amoebas get into your brain and in half an hour one can reproduce itself into 10 thousand more.

Sad story but bad reporting on the newspaper... This is what happens when u lack a science education... Amoebas are not viruses, they're not even in the same family tree :MANiCURE:
