POPDEVASTATION 0
Omg I constantly ponder ARTPOP's concept and out of my millions of suspicions this has never occured to me! The freedom album allowing one to become a creative and rebellions artistic soul! Wow! I love when people think deep into this stuff! Honestly, this has happened to me so i kinda think of the concept this way.. i just let the music and message of all albums lead me and now i feel so free and honest with myself and i think i'm finally ready to create my life the way i want to and live it in it's purest and fullest form :)
DANCeSeXartRAVe 24
I think that the whole point of ARTPOP is that Pop music IS an Art form. Music is a form of Art and maybe GaGa feels that the commercialized pop industry has lost a lot of that, with all of the focus on the charts and on creating a hit song to make as much money as possible. Real Art isn't about money, it's about revealing yourself to the world, being vulnerable and thereby creating that cathartic experience for the audience. GaGa has always created ARTPOP, everything she's done has been ARTPOP, she's constantly trying to bring the Art form of Pop Music and Pop Culture back to the masses. After Born This Way, she is taking a retrospective look back on her career, naming her style of work and celebrating the freedom that we've all achieved. This freedom allows her (and us) to be ourselves and to reveal ourselves, thus creating ART out of ourselves! For me, ARTPOP the album has a clear concept: it's all about the major forces in her life and her journey throughout her career. She chose those 15 songs for a reason. And the fact that she's opening up about all of the important aspects of her life (fashion, d--gs, s-x, technology, performance, love) makes her album very much a piece of Art, and of course it is in her form which is Pop music. ARTPOP. As for the cultural references, the constant references to Pop culture and the references to her favourite works of Art are merely revealing to us her inspiration and how the Art world interconnects, further illustrating the concept of ARTPOP. She's always made Art out of Pop Culture. She's trying to show us that Pop Culture and Pop Music can be as "high brow" as famous visual works of Art. The fact that she can perform ARTPOP in a mainstream, Pop context makes ARTPOP incredibly powerful. I think this is why she wrote "The Fame" albums, they were about making her big so she could bring ARTPOP to the masses, bring ART to the POP. She is incredibly brave for taking such a risk, because of course the massive Pop audience doesn't usually take the time to really a--lyze things. And so, with ARTPOP being such a deep, complex album, OF COURSE it isn't doing as well on the charts! You can't listen to ARTPOP and love it right away, or any of the songs for that matter. You have to listen to the whole album in order, over and over, think about it, watch her performances and see her outfits, acquire knowledge of greek mythology, art history and Pop Culture. It's not really meant for quick, mass consumption. Which is what makes ARTPOP so brave, genius and beautiful. Personally, ARTPOP is my favourite GaGa album because it is so beautifully and artfully crafted. Each song is so carefully produced to evoke powerful emotions. And I think she's done some of her best work this era. I don't mind waiting weeks for something new if she's taking her time and creating something great. Great Art doesn't appear overnight. It takes time for ideas to sit, to evolve and to take shape. Only then do the most amazing works develop. When a play is created, the playwright might take years to write it, another year to get it picked up, weeks of rehearsal and more development of the script and then we get to sit a watch a two hour piece. And then it could be further developed again and again, nothing is every "finished". A lot of great artists take years just to research before beginning a new piece. I am very proud that GaGa took her time to create awesome shows, videos and performances instead of churning out daily TV appearances that weren't as developed or interesting. I live by the philosophy of ARTPOP. Art is everywhere, Art is everything. Pop is Art and Art is Pop. ARTPOP could mean anything because it means everything. A genius era indeed. ARTPOP. NewYorkCity 10,536
ARTPOP Could mean anything. By that Gaga means that ARTPOP is how you percieve it. Because art isn't in black and white with an exact meaning on it in an art gallery. You have to make sense of it yourself. Gaga has given you the tools and the canvas. You must figure out how to make sense of it and put two and two together. It is a poetic and person story of Gaga's life. That's why she says "MY ARTPOP could mean anything". Once you have tried to make sense of the theme then you can apply it to yourself... What does your ARTPOP mean? And ARTPOP is focused on bringing art and pop together in a wondeful explosion of passion. She creates the art (which is the music) in a pop form. And then it doesn't end there. She actually puts artistic visuals into this music to expose pop culture to art. Gaga being a pop icon means what ever she does, she exposes to pop culture. If she goes naked on the streets she exposes pop culture to nudity. This era she has tried (and succeded) to put art into her music. Like with Swine, she makes the song come alive through performing it and then puts art into it like at SXSW. She exposed us to Millie Brown, a performance artist. This was a fusion of pop music (swine) and art. That was ARTPOP. Gaga has incorporated art into many things this era. She incorporated art into fashion with the sea shell bikini being a nod to the birth of Venus, and then there was the Mona Lisa dress, then there was that fancy black and silver outfit she wore in france which was a reference to a painting as well as when she wore that crazy colourful outfit with the weird make up which made it look like she has 2 faces was also artistic. And finally ARTPOP is also about pop culture. She comments on pop culture with songs like DWUW, Applause, Donatella, ARTPOP. Like DWUW... A song about being attacked by the tyrants of pop culture (the media). She used two of the most recognized vistims... R.Kelly and Terry. This is to further comment on pop culture. Oh yeah, and she incorporated art into her visuals. All the art references in Applause video (the Black Swan being one) and with G.U.Y. The lego art work. Genius era tbh. Thanks god there are fans like you. If we just had to survive with some members of this forum saying that "everything is a mess"... but oh well, this just proves the limited vision of some people. Thank you for your post, this is exactly what I think about this era and the ARTPOP that she has done. ART+POP, always together on everything she creates. Guest
I had a really good explanation of ARTPOP that I knew was just right, but I can't find it. Lemme see if I can try to explain my thoughts. ARTPOP could mean anything, so there is not set meaning/image/concept/etc. that she has to stick to. She can do anything that she wants to with this concept. There are absolutely no rules or any standard that she's holding herself to. Things have been inconstant because there is not necessarily a connection with one thing she does this era and another. Art isn't consistent, it doesn't follow any kind of pattern or formula, just like the ARTPOP album and era haven't followed any kind of formula or plan like she has in the past. Basically, each moment in this era is it's own work; it's her own piece of art that she's sharing with the world. That wasn't as clear as my other explanation, but I think it gets the point across. Tropico 4,145
So what I understood from your response is that ARTPOP is an album full of POP songs that are performed or visualized in an ART form? I do see the art and its references in the visuals of this era but I kinda didn't see what any of that in the songs. You may say I sorta expected songs with "artistic/dark" themes when I knew the album was about mixing art with pop, but then I was like but what about songs like Fashion!, Donatella and J&D? Maybe it's how I perceived the concept of art. The songs may not seem artistic on it's own but when Gaga's artistic vision is applied to it they become MORE artistic. But the album is an artistic and personal story. It reflects on all who is Gaga. So the music itself tells a story about Gaga's personal life and we here about her love life, views of pop culture, dark past, her desires, her adventures. The song Donatella is a comment on pop culture and encourages confidence. Fashion! Is about the art of fashion. Fashion is art too. And jewels n d--gs can be viewed as a song about artistic integrity or love. Artistic integrity in the sense that she would prefer the music and love from the world rather than money (music not the bling). And love in the sense that she would want love from her partner rather than money. All the songs on ARTPOP combined is a poetic and artistic journey. EVERY SONG. Art isn't always just paint brushes and portraits. :laughga: ♢ Social Justice Enthusiast ♢
Wet Fire 7,495
It's based on Gaga's experience through the different parts of her life though it mostly focuses on her life after the Born This Way era. It deals with love, fame, feminism and s-x - typical Gaga themes. But themes like Dope, MJH, ARTPOP, Donatella and Do What U Want are somewhat new. Musically Gaga goes back to her roots. But she delives new essence through Dope, DWUW etc. She basically implies that music itself is art as art is limitless. And her music is art and pop at the same time. ryhanna 3,507
The reason why the idea behind ARTPOP never really seems to clear is that ARTPOP wasn't intended to be confined to just the music. Gaga described ARTPOP from day one as a "project." So I think that in order to get a true sense of ARTPOP, we'd need the videos, the music, the performances, the collaborations with artists like Marina Abramovic and Jeff Koons, the app... And as we know, things didn't go as planned with ARTPOP and a lot of ideas and plans had to be scrapped. So I kind of feel like we'll (unfortunately) never get a full picture of what ARTPOP was truly intended to mean because the project didn't turn out as it was supposed to. Obviously there is meaning to the music, but I mean, I think that the music was just one layer on what was originally meant to be a much broader representation of Gaga's artistic philosophy. Bambino 24,286
The songs may not seem artistic on it's own but when Gaga's artistic vision is applied to it they become MORE artistic. All the songs on ARTPOP combined is a poetic and artistic journey. EVERY SONG. Art isn't always just paint brushes and portraits. I see your point. At least, now I kinda have a notion of a meaning that's ARTPOP is supposed to be about. Even thought the entire project, sadly, didn't turn out to be exactly as Gaga wanted. I can also see it as a celebration of what Gaga has been doing all these years, or how she sees what she's been doing, to say the least. Great responses btw ;)
