Muh 144
What's with everybody using the word "glamourise" lately? And NO. It is not hypocritical, MJH is a song about freedom, about how she doesn't want to be a "slave to the blonde" popstar stereotype and how when she smokes weed she feels free. Dope in the other hand is an apologize to all the people who care about her, how she feels she let them down for her addiction. So I think it's more like a story, people try to tell her what to do/be, she wants to be free, she does thins she regrets and now she apologizes. It's actually very honest from her to tell us this way her story, she's still a human and makes mistakes.
Hedi 3
I don't think that Marijuana is what she's talking about. Weed is barely anything compared to some of the blow she's done before Dope is weed and in the Howard Stern interview she confirms Dope is about weed. Tokyo Rose 1,475
Dope is weed and in the Howard Stern interview she confirms Dope is about weed. The lyics refer to alcohol abuse more than anything else. She may want us to believe it's about weed however
drbumblenut 48
Wow, my sad suspicions are confirmed -- most people don't listen to albums as stories. No wonder ARTPOP fell through.

Weed is barely anything compared to some of the blow she's done before I remember when I had this epiphany. I don't think it's weed that she is talking about either. It's the reason I feel such a connection with Gaga and her music though, because I know she's been through a lot, and I know a lot of people who struggle or have struggled with various addictions. She may want us to believe it's about weed however Right, she talks about alcohol in it too, I'm just saying that according to her it includes her past relationship with marijuana use, and has dope in the lyrics, meaning weed. Well in the area where I live and grew up, "dope" refers to hardcore d--gs such as c-----e and meth. Maybe she grew up knowing dope as marijuana. Schwerk 7,244
I remember when I had this epiphany. I don't think it's weed that she's singing about either. It's the reason I feel such a connection with Gaga and her music though, because I know she's been through a lot, and I know a lot of people who struggle or have struggled with various addictions. I'm pretty sure it refers to any form of addiction she's had, alcohol, d--gs, painkillers maybe, food/diets, selfharm maybe, bad relationships.. I did find the way she sang Dope at Roseland kinda hypocritical at times. She obviously was all excited about partying and drinking again and it showed in her performance and speeches. It was a world of difference from the flood of tears when she first played the song at the ARTPOP listening party in Berlin or her YouTube awards performance. Sure, it prob gets easier if she plays it more and she was in an emotionally better place than last fall, but it still feels odd to see her positively adress alcohol or d--gs, seeing the struggle and sadness it cost her. Her relationship with d--gs and alcohol is complex, she's talked about it. She's getting stronger, but the good and the bad of it will always be in her mind, and therefore expressed in her songs. According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch

I reckon that's a reason why she's not singing Dope at artRAVE. I'm not sure the lyrics are completely truthful now. Didn't she say at SXSW that she was on "about step 9" when she sang the "twelve steps" lyric? That's a pretty firm indication she's still smoking pot/doing d--gs. It's sad and I wish she'd stop, but I know how hard addiction is so I don't blame her. I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!! MonsterRocket 55
They're not contrary at all. MJH is about escaping the pop star life and having fun as a random girl drinking and smoking. Dope is about overusing those d--gs when it's not 'necassary' and she's not on party, about overusing them when she's not necessarily partying. Its a long, maybe never ending journey but she seems on the right track. Brave of her to share her struggle with us, hope it helps her. Dangerous Man 9,245
ya'll are reading into this too much. ARTPOP isn't some sort of metaphorical poetic journey, it's just a bunch of wanna-be singles that never fulfilled their destiny. MJH and dope are just songs nnnnnn "A little less conversation and a little more touch my body."
VforVendetta 2,024
These two songs deal with Gaga's love hate relationship with d--gs, a relationshiip that most users have with addictive substances. Also Dope doesn't refer in particular to real Dope.
Girrr 1,086
I think Gaga stopped caring about her hypocrisy a long time ago and little monsters should too. Like her "I hate money" vs. "I love money" speeches during the Monster Ball. I don't think she remembers/cares about half the things she says because all human beings make contradictory statements as time passes. So what?
