this. BTW was very messy compared to ARTPOP. it was also victim to the loudness war, just listen to Americano..

YES THIS. ARTPOP sounds like Gaga and her producers actually spend time mixing and mastering each songs carefully so that the sound at the end actually sounds clean and not a jumbled mess.

As much as I LOVE BTW, I have to agreed, the "loudness" and "boisterous-ness" of it really turned a lot of listeners off.

It's a basic way how to say you don't like certain music when you actually don't understand it.

:trootea:

It means that the song has many synths and other elements that feel out of place.

Gaga doesnt have a single overproduced song and whoever thinks that she has needs to get their ears checked xo

If something is produced to be "loud" then it a not "overproduced". Mostly it's used as a slmple derogative because people don't like the mix or the sounds or something, but they say "overproduced" because it sounds more important.

One of Gagas songs with the most "stuff" going on is telephone but nobody calls it overproduced because they like it.

who cares if people think it's overproduced. That's the kind I like anyway lol. I tend to like the complex productions compare to the simple

Cause once you let it go you better know it's gone

Basically this. When someone says something is overproduced they are not saying it's because it's a song they don't like, what they are really saying is the artist or band isn't talented enough to create actual music without too much studio trickery. For example "Britanny Spears vocals are so overproduced she can't sing live"

A reference to heavy use of audio processing effects such as reverb, delay, or dynamic range compression.

A reference to heavy layering or multitracking; in the context of pop and rock music, this may refer to the addition of elements such as chorused vocals or backing strings.

A reference to radio versions of songs pushed to be more "pop" through the use of loud drum beats or other instrumentation changes.

A reference to heavy use of pitch correction, time correction, or quantization.

A reference to records overseen by a producer who "imposes" his or her own distinctive "sound" or techniques on a band or artist; Producers frequently accused of this kind of "overproduction" include Phil Spector,[1][2] Mutt Lange,[3] Mitch Miller, and Chet Atkins.

Doing any of the above to hide a performer's lack of talent or to take a common theme or idea and make it "different"

Wet Fire

That means unnecessary extra music in a song that makes the song sound noisy or messy.

IMO, Hair (chorus) and Born This Way (single) are overproduced. I still love those songs.

:wtf: at yall ^^

It means there's too many things going on at once. That's all. Yes, it's overused on here.

this, if I compare TFM songs with BTW songs I must say that BTW is overproduced, because in many songs there is too much going on

The only song I think about when reading the world 'overproduced' is Hair  And it does sound so imo.

Yeah, but the live performances of Hair are astoundingly beautiful ... I save them all.

I loved BTW for that reason too! Its an album that I can picture being played in giant stadiums because its loudness can fill the venue.

A big reason why I don't like ARTPOP as much is because it stepped away from the loudness.

When I use it, I mean that ARTPOP is over-produced as in over-worked (compare MANiCURE and Swine at SF vs the album, not including vocals or obvious live differences) and sometimes her vocals are a little too... metallic and unnaturally crisp- as is the music. There is such a thing as being too clear and polished. If you listen to the clarity and vocals on her previous albums in comparison then you can probably hear it. I like the music itself, but mixing and production are not DJWS's strongest points imo. RedOne was probably her consistently the best producer. I wish she would have him at least co-produce and help with the other productions, even if he didn't create them himself. He just polishes up so well in all genres that he has done.

I'm not saying all of ARTPOP is over-produced, but I do think about half of it is. It's so inorganic vocally, even on some notes in Dope. I don't think everyone can hear it, but it leaves the sound empty.

But so many people get overly-defensive on here and act like it's a cheap cop out of an opinion. smh. It's not misunderstanding music, it's understanding that highly produced and mastered music isn't always the better option for some songs and looking past a childish Gaga bias to realize that. It wouldn't be such a widely-cited criticism if there wasn't any ground to it.

And yet, I've seen people argue that ARTPOP should only be listened to loud. I think BTW was much better loud. It fills your body.

With the differing opinions about the meaning of overproduced; which songs, if any, were overproduced; and if it's good or bad to be overproduced, I would like to put in a good word for "not produced".  My favorite versions of the songs are from live performances;  the artRave event, swineFest, performances in Sydney, Paris, Rio, etc., performances on talk shows and awards shows.  Somehow the live performance resonate with me more than the albums, singles, and music videos.  To me, the live performances are so personal, so passionate, so joyous or moving.  To me, it's Gaga being Gaga communicating directly with the people with no production to get in the way.

I live outside the space time continuum.
